Mid-Week Chill

A large, dominating high pressure system will take total control of our weather for the rest of this week and into the weekend.

This high pressure system is currently located far north of the Upper Great Lakes, near the Hudson Bay in northern Canada.

As this high pressure system moves east-southeast across Canada, it will turn our winds northerly today, particularly in the afternoon. That will kick off a brief but notable cooling trend.

It will still be plenty warm today before the core of the cooler air arrives, but not quite as warm as the last couple days. Only the warmest valley and urban locations will break 75 degrees, and low 70s are likely in higher elevations and across Monroe and Wayne counties.

There are a few thin clouds lingering across the area this morning, but most of the day should be mostly sunny, despite the cold front like nature of the weather pattern.

Winds will turn breezy this afternoon with gusts of 20-25 mph. The wind will be lighter tonight, but still from the north and northeast. Skies will be clear.

Most areas will drop to the 40-45 degree range tonight. Pockets of upper 30s are likely across the Southern Tier and especially in and around Cortland County.

The north wind will pick back up Wednesday morning and persist through the day. Wind speeds over 10 mph and gusts to 25 mph are again expected.

Despite mostly sunny skies, the north wind will really hold temperatures back. Most areas will be about ten degrees cooler, meaning many areas will not reach 65 degrees.

Winds will drop under 5 mph Wednesday night with skies remaining clear. Many areas across the Southern Tier and in and around Cortland County will turn frosty with lows in the mid 30s and colder pockets. Areas closer to the lakes will stay in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees.

Winds will remain under 5 mph on Thursday, but will swing around to a south and southeast direction as the high pressure system turns south and passes through New England.

It will still be cool on Thursday, but most areas should end up in the upper, not lower half of the 60s.

Skies will be sunny, though some thin clouds will pass through, signaling a return push of milder air.

Warm, Dry Weekend Weather

Clouds, let alone rain, will be hard to come by this weekend with the high pressure system parking itself along and just off the Mid-Atlantic coast.

With the high to our southeast, warmer air will start to move back in thanks to the clockwise flow of air around the high.

Steady south winds are expected Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, though wind speeds will remain light.

Combined with the full on sunshine, temperatures will quickly rebound from the mid-week chill.

Morning lows Friday will range through the 40s, while afternoon highs will push back into the 70s. Most areas should end up somewhere around 75 degrees, with both warmer and cooler pockets.

Saturday morning will be split with mid 40s to the south and low 50s to the north. The afternoon will see all areas above 75 degrees, even in higher elevations. Low 80s are possible along the I-90 and I-390 corridors.

On Sunday, temperatures near or above 80 will spread further, reaching most valley and near-lake locations. Higher elevations will mainly be in the upper 70s.

Monday will be no different, except perhaps some thin clouds mixing with the sunshine. Temperatures will remain around 80 degrees.

Rain may finally be possible toward the middle of next week as a cold front moves through. Rainfall amounts will probably be quite low, though. Behind that front, temperatures are less certain, but will most likely take a notable dip of some sort.
