Frost Advisory
A northerly flow of cold air has set up across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic between a Canadian high pressure north of the Great Lakes and Hurricane Imelda over the western Atlantic.
This setup has acted as a cloudless, rainless cold front, with temperatures 10-15 degrees cooler today than the first two days of the week.
Afternoon highs in the mid 60s will be widespread across the region today, with a few pockets only managing the low 60s. Valley locations in the Southern Tier may be able to reach the upper 60s.
Skies will remain sun-filled with very little to no cloud cover. The north wind will peak around 10 mph during the afternoon with a few gusts approaching 25 mph.
The wind will drop to under 5 mph tonight with only a batch of thin clouds moving in well after midnight.
This will lead to ideal cooling conditions, and widespread temperatures in the 30s will result. Only immediate lakeshore locations will stay around 40 degrees.
For much of the Southern Tier and Central New York, frost formation is likely to become widespread with lows around 35 degrees. Localized variations based on topography are likely, leading to cold pockets and milder pockets.
The National Weather Service has issued frost advisories for the following counties, from west to east: Allegany, Steuben, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, and Cortland County. Not all areas in those counties will see frost, and counties not listed could still see some frosty pockets.
The predawn deck of clouds that will move in may save a degree or two in the end, but it is best to be proactive in protecting any plants you don’t want to lose yet.
Thursday morning will continue to see some clouds, filtering the sunshine. The afternoon will have gaps of sunny skies with some more periods of mixed or filtered sunshine.
Winds will turn to the south and southeast at around 5 mph, and afternoon highs should be a few degrees warmer as a result. Higher elevations may stick to the mid 60s, while most areas see upper 60s. Some low 70s are possible in the Genesee Valley up toward Rochester.
Thursday night will be cool, but not as cold or frosty as tonight thanks to increasing southerly flow. Wind speeds will be 5-10 mph overnight, with lows ranging from the low 40s across the cool south to near 50 degrees along the lake shores.

Warm Weekend Weather
The midweek chill will vanish as quickly as it arrived, with temperatures shooting back up into the 70s on Friday.
South winds will persist with sunshine and just a few passing clouds.
Afternoon highs will generally be in the mid 70s, with the Genesee Valley again getting warmer, and some higher elevations, particularly in the east, staying a bit cooler. Temperatures Friday night will be in the mid 40s to the south and low 50s to the north.
Winds will be nearly calm at the surface by Saturday, but with a broad southerly flow aloft across eastern North America remaining in place.
Skies will continue to be sunny with a few clouds on Saturday, but Sunday and Monday look even sunnier.
Temperatures will continue to rise, with upper 70s to near 80 degrees on Saturday, many areas around 80 degrees on Sunday, and low 80s possible on Monday. By Monday, morning, lows will generally be in the 50s.
A pattern change looks possible toward the middle of next week, with some rain showers possibly as early as late Tuesday. Temperatures should drop later in the week, but it remains to be seen how much of a rainy pattern sets up.
