Early Week Weather

A large coastal low continues to spin along the eastern coast of the United States.

The low will be at its northernmost position today along the coast of New Jersey. This should be just close enough for some occasional showers today.

Already this morning, there have been some intermittent bands of showers passing through. This will continue throughout the day, possibly with some steadier showers from time to time east of Seneca Lake.

The rain will be moving from east to west and will have a hard time penetrating drier air over western New York. So, the further west you are, the less rain you should see today. Some areas, especially west of Canandaigua Lake, may even see a little sun poking through at times this afternoon.

Winds will be from the northeast at around 10 mph. Temperatures will mainly be in the mid and upper 50s, but north of the Thruway and into the Genesee Valley, low 60s are possible.

Any lingering showers early this evening should dissipate before too long, but skies will remain mostly cloudy overnight. Most areas will see lows between 45-50 degrees, except for a few cold pockets across the Southern Tier and around Cortland County.

Tuesday should have increasing sunshine with winds turning northerly as the low moves quickly out into the open waters of the Atlantic. Wind speeds will be around 10 mph.

Despite the northerly flow, temperatures will be warmer thanks to the sunshine and departure of the low. Mid 60s will be common, with low 60s in some higher elevations.

A subtle cold front will pass through Tuesday night. A stray spit of rain cannot be ruled out, but anything that falls will be very light.

With an increase in clouds, overnight temperatures will stick to the 40s, with the usual cool spots in the low 40s and the warmer areas above 45 degrees.

Late Week and Weekend Weather

High pressure will build in from Canada for the second half of the week with some cool, dry air.

Wednesday should have a mix of sun and clouds with highs ranging through the 50s. North-northwest winds will approach 15 mph with a few gusts to 30 mph.

Winds will remain at 5-10 mph overnight as skies clear out. Most areas should drop into the 30s, with the coldest pockets in the low 30s. For those who didn’t lose their cold sensitive plants last week, there will be areas of frost to protect against.

Thursday should be mostly sunny with north-northwest winds to match Wednesday. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the mid 50s with low 50s in the hilly areas.

The wind will become nearly calm Thursday night with another night of clear skies. Temperatures will end up a couple of degrees colder, similar to last Friday morning, with the coldest areas slipping into the upper 20s with even lakeshores reaching the mid 30s.

Friday’s highs will mainly stick to the upper half of the 50s with light winds and some late thin clouds.

South winds will take over Friday night, along with some clouds and a few showers as a warm front moves through. A few of those showers may linger into Saturday morning. Most areas should start Saturday in the 40s.

Sunshine will increase on Saturday with no additional rain expected. South winds will be steady, but not too strong, with speeds under 10 mph. Temperatures will get a noticeable boost with most areas west of Cayuga Lake near or above 70 degrees with some lingering 60s to the east.

A strong weather system will move into the area late Sunday into Monday with rain and wind. The timing and fine details of this system remain to be seen.

Temperatures will be seasonable behind this system next week, which, for the second half of October, means highs mainly in the 50s.
