Mild temperatures today before another shot of chilly air

finger lakes weather forecast tuesday october 14 2025 milky clouds cover most of the sky with a few gaps of blue above shadows and sunlight dancing across a rolling field of cut grass and distant trees ablaze with fall color.
Despite lingering clouds and a north wind, highs will reach the 60s today. A cold front tonight will make it about 10 degrees cooler tomorrow and Thursday. [Photo by Carole Norton Leach]

Overnight Cold Front

The coastal low that has been bringing intermittent rain to the area the last few days has drifted far enough out to sea so that we will not see any more rain from it.

Clouds linger, however, and will be slow to dissipate this morning. Breaks of sunshine should become more common during the afternoon hours, and the day should end on the sunny side.

North winds will be in place today between the coastal low and high pressure building into the Upper Great Lakes. Wind speeds will be near or under 10 mph.

For today, however, these north winds will not yet bring in cooler air. Most areas will see highs topping out in the mid 60s, which for this time of the year is close to but slightly above the daily averages.

Skies will start off mostly clear this evening, but clouds will build back in during the middle of the night. Continued north winds will pull cold air south as a cold front.

A few predawn and early morning spits of rain will be possible. Anything that falls will be very light, and most areas will not see any rain at all.

North-northwest winds behind the front will increase to 10-15 mph during the day on Wednesday. Clouds will once again dominate the morning, then slowly break up during the afternoon.

Temperatures will be about ten degrees cooler tomorrow compared to today, with highs generally in the mid 50s.

Skies will continue to clear Wednesday night, but north-northwest winds will persist with speeds around 5 mph. Temperatures will drop into the mid and upper 30s, with both colder and warmer pockets based on local geography.

Warming for the Weekend

Thursday will be sunny with just a few thin clouds here or there. Temperatures will remain in the mid 50s with north-northwest winds of 10-15 mph once again.

Thursday night will be colder with winds turning calm. Widespread frost and freeze conditions are expected with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s in the coldest pockets to the mid and upper 30s along the lakes.

Winds will be lighter, but still northerly on Friday. Skies should be a mix of sun and clouds.

Temperatures will be slightly warmer in the afternoon with highs in the upper 50s.

Wind direction will swing around to the south Friday night, and a warm front will eventually move through the region.

Like the cold front, only a few stray showers are expected with this front late Friday night into early Saturday morning. However, confidence in the rain, or lack thereof, is lower for this frontal system, and there is a greater chance for any showers to actually produce some brief but measurable rainfall.

Temperatures will start Saturday morning in the 40s for most areas thanks to the southerly winds and overnight clouds.

Saturday will keep the southerly winds, though they will not be too strong with speeds near or under 10 mph. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds.

Afternoon highs will get a boost from the warm front with upper 60s and low 70s. Generally speaking, the western half of the region will be slightly warmer than the eastern half.

Saturday night will be mild with overnight lows in the 50s. Sunday will follow with highs at least in the upper 60s.

A developing low pressure system to the west will bring rain in late Sunday. Whether this comes in the afternoon or holds off until after sunset remains to be seen, but it should be a widespread rain once it arrives.

The low will spin to our north on Monday, keeping at least rain showers in the forecast while providing some blustery winds. Temperatures will retreat to around 60 degrees.

Next week’s weather remains uncertain with several chances for rain at varying points. Temperatures will ultimately be determined by the timing and pattern of these weather systems but generally look seasonable in the 55-65 degree range. Cooler weather looks more likely toward next weekend.
