Windy Weather System

Another weather system will pass through the area tonight, bringing rain and strong winds late this afternoon and this evening.

Clouds are in place ahead of the system, though some southern parts of the region may see some filtered sun from time to time this morning and early this afternoon.

Meanwhile, for areas in the north, a spit of rain cannot be totally ruled out through the early afternoon.

It will already be a bit breezy during the day today, with south and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. These winds will help push temperatures into the 55 to 60 degree range this afternoon.

Rain coverage and wind speeds will increase after 3 PM from northwest to southeast. Most areas should see at least a few showers before the sun sets.

The cold front itself will move through during the late afternoon and early evening hours, possibly with a more concentrated line of heavier rain showers. A few lightning strikes will be possible with this line, but the greater concern will be the atmospheric dynamics along the front, which may transport stronger winds to the surface.

Localized gusts could exceed 60 mph, causing sporadic tree damage and power outages. Even if there is no lightning, severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued.

Strong winds will not be limited to the pseudo-thunderstorms. The general background wind will also increase during the evening, especially behind this line of showers. Winds will turn to the northwest with speeds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts of 40 to 50 mph.

The strongest winds will move out by midnight, with top gusts during the overnight closer to just 30 mph, still from the northwest.

Cool air will quickly move in tonight, sending temperatures into the low and mid 30s by Thursday morning.

Precipitation will continue as showers through the night and into early Thursday morning. Lower elevations and lake shores will likely remain all or mostly rain, but snow may take over in the higher elevations. Some grassy and elevated surfaces may see a light coating.

The showers and flurries should diminish during the morning with a mostly dry, but rather cloudy afternoon. Northwest winds will pick up a bit more steam again with speeds over 15 mph and gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

Afternoon highs will generally be in the mid 40s, though some hilltops may stick to the low 40s.

Weather Stays Active

Friday will play out something like Monday and today, with mostly dry weather during the day followed by some rain late. Winds will also increase through the day, but look to max out with gusts under 40 mph.

Temperatures on Friday will start in the upper 20s and low 30s with a few cooler pockets, particularly in the east where some clearing may take hold for a time overnight. Afternoon highs will range through the 50s.

A stray spit of rain may linger into early Saturday, but mostly it should be a dry, mostly cloudy day.

Thanks to southerly winds the first half of Friday night, Saturday morning’s lows will mainly be in the mid 40s. Afternoon highs will mostly be in the low 50s, though parts of the Southern Tier may sneak above 55 degrees for a time.

The next weather system will roll into the area on Sunday. The projected path of this low is closer to overhead than the other systems this past week, so there is a little less clarity on how the weather will evolve.

In a highly unlikely, yet still at least slightly plausible scenario that a small cluster of models consistently show, the center of the low tracks to our east, resulting in some accumulating snowfall late Sunday and Sunday night.

Much more likely will be a path overhead or to the west, which will keep temperatures closer to 50 degrees with precipitation easily staying as rain. Just how much rain will depend on the exact path the low takes.

Regardless, cold air will build in and deliver our first preview of more wintry weather. High temperatures Monday and/or Tuesday will likely be in the mid and upper 30s with widespread overnight lows in the 20s.

Snow, either wrapping around the backside of this system, from lake effect, or from another subtle weather disturbance, looks likely early next week. Accumulations will likely be elevation and location dependent, especially in the case of any lake effect, but some areas may see their first inch or two.

And, lest you think we’d get a break, it will remain plenty windy as well, especially on Sunday and Tuesday.

Temperatures will be slow to moderate next week with highs mainly sticking to the 40s. No big weather systems are showing on the models at this time, but clouds and spits off the Great Lakes at a minimum will continue to be possible.
