Weekend Weather Forecast

A small piece of a large high pressure system centered over the southeastern United States is passing through the Finger Lakes today.

The result will be mostly quiet weather today, with some sun even making an appearance.

Clouds have already broken for much of the western Finger Lakes at sunrise, but some lingering lake effect cloud cover and a few spits of precipitation remain lingering over the east.

It may be too much to totally dislodge those eastern clouds, but even those areas should see some breaks of sun here and there.

New clouds will stream in from the northwest later in the morning, resulting in mixed skies or some filtered sunshine through the afternoon.

Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph, but gusts should generally stay under 30 mph. Afternoon highs will be in the low and mid 40s, with a few upper 40s across the valleys of the Southern Tier.

Clouds will decrease tonight but still will not completely disappear from the region. Winds will also become nearly calm, helping temperatures fall to the upper 20s and low 30s.

South winds will develop early Saturday morning with any lingering breaks in the clouds filling in. Stray spits of rain will be possible as early as the midday hours, continuing through the first half of the afternoon.

Temperatures will push into the low and mid 50s throughout the region as wind speeds build to near 10 mph by the mid and late afternoon.

Showers will increase and become widespread late in the afternoon and into the early evening hours. A few localized downpours will be possible.

The steadiest rain will end by the second half of the evening with winds turning to the northwest and increasing to 15 mph. Cool air will start to move in, with temperatures falling back to near 40 degrees after a mild evening.

Sunday will not see much change in temperature, and if anything, it will be a couple degrees cooler by the late afternoon.

Scattered rain and snow showers will be likely, but the northwest wind will be the bigger issue. Wind speeds will increase quickly after sunrise, with gusts of 45 mph likely throughout the region. Localized gusts to 50 mph will be possible, especially north of the Thruway.

Weather Next Week

Wind speeds will drop somewhat after sunset Sunday but will still gust around 30 mph through the night.

Areas of snow showers are likely, which will continue into Monday. At this time, the snow does not look well organized, so accumulations will be minor and limited to scattered locations.

After sunrise Monday, the wind, still from the northwest, will increase again. However, it will not be as strong as Sunday, with top gusts in the 35 to 40 mph range.

Temperatures Monday will start in the 25 to 30 degree range with a high in the mid and upper 30s.

A few isolated snow showers will linger into Tuesday with little to no accumulation or impact. These will be most likely in the usual areas downwind of Lake Ontario. Outside of these snow showers, we may start to see some sun breaking back out of the overcast.

Morning lows will start in the upper 20s, and afternoon highs will end up around 40 degrees.

Sunshine will become more likely for the middle of next week with highs slowly rising further into the 40s.

Winds will also be light, especially on Wednesday, as high pressure passes overhead.

The weather will become unsettled again for the late week and weekend period, but temperatures will be pushing 50 degrees, so anything that falls will be rain.
