Rain returns to the Finger Lakes Thursday

Finger Lakes weather forecast rain
Clouds will increase Thursday morning and rain will move back in this afternoon.

Another stretch of cloudy, rainy weather will get kicked off Thursday afternoon and will linger through the weekend.

Steady Rain Later Thursday Into Early Friday

Thursday is starting off with a little sun, but clouds are streaming back into the Finger Lakes as a large storm system slowly makes its way towards the region.

This system has a large amount of moisture with it. Rain is widespread across the Ohio Valley and Deep South. All of that rain is heading towards our area.

By this afternoon, widespread light rain will start to move into the Finger Lakes from the southwest. The rain will become steady overnight, with near constant precipitation overnight and into Friday morning.

This widespread area of rain will taper off by midday Friday, possibly ending with a few rumbles of thunder and heavier downpours as a wedge of warm air tries to push into the area.

Additional scattered showers will be possible into Friday afternoon, but these will likely be somewhat few and far between.

Total rain amounts by Friday evening will range from around a half-inch to as much as an inch and a half.

Gusty winds will also be in place Friday, with some of the higher elevations of the Southern Tier and eastern Finger Lakes gusting over 40 mph at times.

Dreary Weekend Weather

The weather will not improve for the weekend. In fact, if anything, it will get more dismal.

The wedge of warm air will remain in place Friday night but will start to be eroded from the west by Saturday morning.

While areas in the eastern Finger Lakes will start Saturday in the 50s and possibly push 60 degrees by midday, temperatures further west will start falling quickly into the 40s.

This drop in temperature will progress eastward through the day and will likely be accompanied by a band of rain. Scattered showers will be possible ahead of this cold front, with more numerous rain showers behind it.

Temperatures will end Saturday in the low and mid 40s, with morning lows Sunday in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. Only a slight rise in temperature to the low and mid 40s is expected on Sunday with- you guessed it- more rain showers.

The wind will be gusty both Saturday and Sunday as well with gusts of 30-35 mph.

There is still a chance for a few snowflakes to mix in with the rain showers Sunday night and Monday as temperatures remain very chilly.
