Raw, cold Monday followed by frosty Tuesday Morning

finger lakes weather forecast lake effect rain cold frost freeze growing season ends
Temperatures Monday will be stuck in the 40s with a good deal of clouds and some lake effect rain showers, especially for the eastern Finger Lakes. Skies clear tonight, resulting in widespread frost and freeze conditions.

Temperatures 30 degrees cooler Monday

Sunday’s strong cold front has set the Finger Lakes back about 30 degrees today.A combination of a steady stream of cold air on northwest winds and lake effect clouds and showers will keep temperatures down in the Finger Lakes today.

High temperatures will not be much warmer than the morning lows. Most places will fail to reach 50 degrees this afternoon after approaching 80 degrees yesterday.

Scattered showers this morning will consolidate to mostly areas east of Cayuga Lake this afternoon. Here, clouds should remain thick most of the day and showers will persist into the late afternoon off of Lake Ontario.

Further west, where the impacts of the lake effect will be less, skies should gradually start to brighten this afternoon.

Winds will remain gusty, but not as strong as on Sunday. Top gusts this morning could approach 30 mph before dropping slightly this afternoon.

Widespread Frost and Freeze Conditions Tonight

As Sunday’s storm system continues to pull away, skies will continue to clear this evening, even for the eastern Finger Lakes.

Winds will drop as high pressure starts to build in. Combined, the clearing skies and calming winds will lead to the coldest night yet this autumn.

Frost advisories are in place for the northern Finger Lakes. No advisories or warnings are in place for the southern Finger Lakes or Southern Tier, but only because the date is after October 15th.

The National Weather Service considers the growing season over for those areas, and thus will no longer issue frost or freeze alerts until the spring.

However, despite the technicalities, those with sensitive vegetation should expect temperatures near or below freezing tomorrow morning across the southern areas. Some places may even slip into the upper 20s.

Further north, lows should generally stay above freezing, with mostly mid 30s during the morning.

Nicer Weather for the Rest of the Week

After Tuesday morning’s cold temperatures, the rest of the week will not be too bad.

High temperatures Tuesday afternoon should make a run at 60 degrees. Now that it is mid-October, this is actually right about on average.

That means that the rest of the week will be warmer than normal, as temperatures push into the upper 60s on Wednesday and near 70 degrees on Thursday.

Friday will cool a bit, with highs in the low 60s. More 70s are expected for the weekend.

Skies throughout the week will generally be sunny. After today’s showers, no rain is expected in the Finger Lakes at least through the weekend.
