Cooler air intensifies for the weekend

From Comfortable to Chilly

It took some work on Thursday, but eventually a front pushed the humidity away. Now, cool, dry air is continuing to intensify over the region. The front, however, is not far to our south.

The next couple of days should be dry and pleasant in the Finger Lakes, even if sunshine is somewhat limited.

An area of high pressure will pass across southern Canada, feeding the cool air into the Finger Lakes on north winds. The wind will be stronger on Saturday, with gusts over 20 mph.

With the front just to the south and a strong gradient between warm, humid air and cool, dry air, there will be periods of clouds throughout the day Friday and possibly into Saturday. There area also areas of fog early this morning throughout the region.

Temperatures on Friday will reach the mid 70s. Saturday will start with morning lows in the upper 50s. Afternoon highs will then top out in the upper 60s.

No rain is expected either day. That will change as we head into Sunday. As the rain moves in, temperatures Sunday across the southern portions of the region may not escape the 50s, while areas further north see just low 60s for highs.

Heavy Rain from Gordon

The remains of Tropical Storm Gordon will merge with the frontal boundary over the weekend.

The combination of the front and the tropical moisture will cause an outbreak of widespread heavy rain.

This rain could work into southern and western areas of the Finger Lakes as early as Sunday afternoon. Rain will then overspread the entire region Sunday night and continue into Monday.

Some thundery downpours could accompany the already steady, heavy rain, especially on Monday.

Widespread rain amounts of 2-3 inches seem likely, though there is still some variability in expectations. The flooding potential will have to be watched, as any thundery downpours could be enough to cause some issues.

Temperatures will come back up to around 70 degrees on Monday and should remain in the 70s most of next week. The air will not be as dry as it is this weekend, but nor should it be nearly as humid as it was this week.

I will have more on the rain from Gordon this weekend.
