Clouds on the Increase

Skies partially cleared overnight in the wake of Wednesday’s front but will thicken over the course of Thursday in advance of a new weather system.

Low pressure will organize over the Southeastern United States today and lift northeast into the Mid-Atlantic and then New England tonight.

Thin clouds high in the atmosphere are already streaming into the Finger Lakes out ahead of this system, but for at least a few hours this morning, the sun should still shine.

Most areas will see light rain Thursday night, but a small band of locally higher amounts is possible over the southern and especially eastern Finger Lakes. Click to enlarge map.

Gradually though, the clouds will become thicker and will be joined by clouds lower in the atmosphere. This should decrease the amount of sunshine steadily through the day.

With the clouds and a light southeast flow off the Atlantic Ocean, temperatures will only manage to reach the low 60s this afternoon.

A few showers may start to work in as early as 6 or 7 PM, but the majority of the rain from this system will fall during the overnight period.

Rainfall amounts should be fairly light, though a small band of locally higher amounts will be possible over the eastern Finger Lakes. A few places could see as much as a half-inch or more, while other areas see under a quarter-inch. Far western areas will see little to no rain.

Improving Friday, Cool Weekend

The rain should end by sunrise on Friday. Clouds will remain rather thick early on, but the sun should start to break through by midday.

Winds will reorganize themselves and begin to blow from the southwest, importing some warmer air.

High temperatures should reach around 70 degrees. Some low 70s will be possible if the sun works its way out quicker.

Temperatures will drop back into the 50s Friday night, but will go no further as the southwest wind continues.

A new cold front will then drop southeast across the region on Saturday morning. This front will not have much moisture or energy, so only a couple of widely scattered showers are expected.

A breezy northwest wind will develop behind the front for Saturday afternoon, keeping temperatures in the low 60s.

Skies should turn clear before sunset Saturday and winds will lessen Saturday evening. This will lead to a chilly Sunday morning with widespread low and mid 40s for lows. Some of the colder valley locations will probably sneak into the upper 30s.

Sunday will be sunny with light winds and near normal temperatures in the mid 60s.
