Halloween Weather Forecast

A storm system will bring warm air and rain showers to the Finger Lakes for Halloween.

The warmth will be the first to arrive. Already this morning, a warm front is lifting northeast through the region. Temperatures in Western New York are starting the day near 50 degrees while Central New York is in the upper 30s.

As low pressure continues to press northeast into Canada, more of this warm air will spread across the Finger Lakes.

Temperatures will jump into the 50s this morning and top out with an afternoon high near 60 degrees. Even this evening will remain mild, with temperatures hovering in the mid 50s well after sunset.

South and southwest winds will be gusty as it brings the warm air in. Expect gusts around 30 mph through the afternoon with lighter winds this evening.

Unfortunately, this warm weather will be spoiled by some rain. A few stray showers exist in the area this morning, especially near Lake Ontario as the warm front moves through.

More widespread shower activity will spread from west to east during the early and mid-afternoon. Scattered on and off showers will persist into the late afternoon and early evening before the rain tapers off completely after trick-or-treat time.

The rain will not be heavy for most of the time. Most areas will see less than a tenth of an inch through midnight.

Trick-or-treaters should expect to get a little wet today, but it should be more of a minor annoyance than a significant problem for most. The warm temperatures will also help make the weather more tolerable this evening.

More Rain Thursday and Friday, Some Heavy

By Thursday morning, the cold front associated with this storm system will push east of the Finger Lakes and stall out.

A new area of rain will move northeast along the front, arriving in the Finger Lakes as steady light rain by mid-morning.

The rain will persist for much of the day though a few breaks will be possible in the afternoon. The rain should pick up in intensity Thursday night with some heavy downpours possible.

Temperatures will fall back into the mid 40s Thursday morning and remain locked in place for most of the day.

The rain will taper to showers Friday morning as the center of a new low pressure system tracks directly overhead. Warm air will surge into the Finger Lakes just ahead of this low, with temperatures Friday morning quickly shooting into the 50s and then 60s.

As the low pushes north, cold air will wrap around the backside and move in from the west.

A sharp gradient between mid and upper 60s and upper 40s will develop along with some showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder. By Friday evening, 40s will again be widespread across the area and rainfall amounts will be between one and two inches.

Scattered showers will linger into Saturday when highs will only reach the low and mid 40s.

Sunshine should return on Sunday with highs in the upper 40s.
