Warming Peaks Friday

A major winter storm over the Midwest will push warm air back towards the Finger Lakes for the end of this week.

While this system has just begun to take shape, the Finger Lakes can expect a slight boost in temperature today compared to yesterday.

High temperatures this afternoon should reach the mid 30s for most of the region.

Skies will remain cloudy throughout the day. A few light snow showers off the Great Lakes will fly from time to time, especially during the afternoon.

Snow accumulations through today should be no more than a light coating for some localized areas.

Winds will be variable tonight before turning southeast for Thursday. Skies will be rather cloudy once again, but highs should reach the upper 30s. A few places will hit 40 degrees.

Rain moves in Thursday night, mostly after midnight. A little ice may be possible as the precipitation first falls. By Friday morning, precipitation will have long since turned to all rain.

Steady rain will taper to showers for most of Friday. Temperatures will push into the upper 40s with a few low 50s near and west of Rochester.

Friday will have gusty winds, especially over higher elevations.

Rain amounts should be much lighter than last Friday’s storm with most areas seeing about a half-inch of precipitation.

Bouncing Around for the New Year

Our weather pattern will continue to bounce around as we close out 2018 and welcome 2019. Such is often the case when the storm track takes low pressure systems to our west.

The weekend is looking cooler as Friday’s system departs and high pressure builds in. This high should keep lake effect to a minimum this weekend.

Saturday will be cloudy with a few stray snow showers, especially early in the day. Temperatures will start the day in the upper 30s but will slowly fall back towards the upper 20s.

Skies will turn mostly sunny for Sunday, but it will be chilly. Highs will reach the upper 20s with very light winds.

New Year’s Eve on Monday will have increasing clouds and increasing temperatures as the next system approaches. Highs should push towards 40 degrees with rain arriving before midnight.
