Saturday Morning Weather Notes

A cold front will move through the Finger Lakes this afternoon, triggering showers and thunderstorms across the region.

Most areas should see at least some rain today with a few pockets seeing some heavy downpours. Not all areas will see a heavy thunderstorm, though.

Unlike Friday’s storms, which moved very little and thus put down copious amounts of rain, today’s storms should be progressive. Still, some localized flood concerns will be possible with plenty of moisture in the atmosphere to support torrential downpours.

There is also a small chance for a damaging wind gust or two and perhaps some small hail. Lightning is always a risk with any thunderstorm.

These thunderstorms will be most likely during the early afternoon for the northwestern Finger Lakes and during the mid afternoon for areas further south and east.

Using Penn Yan as a reference point in the center of the Finger Lakes region, areas to the north and west should see most of the activity before 2 PM. Areas around Penn Yan will be in the neighborhood of 2 PM, while areas south and east will be after 2 PM.

There may also be some activity developing ahead of the main area of thunderstorms which could bring some rain earlier than these times.

After 5 PM, the Finger Lakes should be cleared of thunderstorms. Areas of rain and showers will linger into the evening before they, too, move out or dissipate.

A stretch of dry, generally sunny weather will begin on Sunday and continue through Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. During this stretch, humidity levels will be less, overnight lows will be cooler, and daytime temperatures will be near or slightly above normal.

Be sure to monitor the FLX Weather radar for the latest on the storms this afternoon. This radar is fully interactive and mobile friendly.
