Feeling Like Late Summer

Cooler air will stick around the Finger Lakes through the weekend as a high pressure system passes by to our north.

This morning, the high pressure system was centered far to the west over northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Cool, dry air began to work in ahead of this high later yesterday afternoon and overnight.

Clear skies have worked in across the area overnight as a cold front over the Mid-Atlantic continues to pull away. Today will start sunny, but fair-weather clouds will be quick to bubble up during the second half of the morning.

The rest of the day will be a mix of sun and clouds. The north wind will be a touch breezy, gusting to or just above 20 mph.

High temperatures today will within a degree or two of 70. Areas along I-90 have the best chance at getting just above 70 degrees while the higher elevations should end up just shy of 70 degrees.

Tonight will be clear for most of the region. A few clouds and even a couple showers Lake Ontario will be possible on a north-northeast wind. These will be most likely across Wayne, Ontario, Yates, Livingston, and Monroe counties.

Overnight lows will fall into the mid and low 50s for most areas. A few valleys in the Southern Tier could slip into the 40s, while upper 50s are more likely in the areas where clouds and showers are possible as outlined above.

Any precipitation should dissipate quickly Saturday morning with sunshine elsewhere. Again, fair-weather clouds will pop up and temperatures will settle close to 70 degrees.

The wind will shift to the east on Sunday, bringing a few extra clouds and maybe a shower. Areas east of Cayuga Lake have the best shot at a stray shower, but most areas should stay dry. High temperatures will reach the low and even mid 70s.

Next Week Preview

Temperatures will continue to moderate Monday and Tuesday with highs reaching the mid 70s. Both days should be dry with ample sunshine.

A slow moving front will slide through the region on Wednesday. Rain and a few thunderstorms will be likely. It is too early to nail down the timing or how much rain will fall, though.

Thursday and Friday will return to sunshine behind the front. Temperatures Thursday will retreat back into the low 70s, but Friday should warm above 75 degrees for most of the region.

A new system may roll in towards Saturday, keeping temperatures behind it cool.

Temperatures in the long range are generally considered to continue this trend, but there are still at least some signs that it may get warmer for a few days as we head into September. We usually have a few hot days in September, so it is not time to completely write Summer out of the picture yet.
