Friday-Saturday Rain

A slow-moving area of low pressure will track across Pennsylvania today, gradually increasing showers across the Finger Lakes.

Most areas will probably end up dry through the morning with showers remaining mainly west of I-390. There is even some sunshine over the southeastern Finger Lakes early this morning.

Precipitation will crawl eastward this afternoon, and new showers will develop out ahead of the primary area of rain. This will result in all the region seeing rain chances increase through the afternoon.

Steady rain will fall this evening before the rain gradually exits to the east overnight. By dawn Saturday, the steady rain should be just east of the area, though scattered showers will still be present in the Finger Lakes.

Showers will continue to push eastward on Saturday, but some pop-up afternoon showers are likely throughout the area.

In all, the best chance for steady rain will come from the late afternoon through the evening. Locally over a half-inch of rain may fall, and a few areas could end up with over an inch. This is most likely the further east you go.

Temperatures will remain chilly during this time. For the western areas that will see showers as early as this morning, highs today will only be in the mid and upper 40s. To the east, where the rain holds off the longest, highs should reach the mid 50s.

Temperatures tonight will mostly be near or above 40 degrees, keeping all precipitation falling as rain. Once the rain tapers off, a quick dip into upper 30s just before dawn is possible.

Saturday will have highs reach the low 50s for most areas. The Rochester area could see mid 50s, especially if some sun pokes out during the midday hours. Upper 40s are more likely in the hills of Central New York.

Skies will clear at least partially Saturday night, but a west-southwest wind will prevent it from getting too cold. Still, a few of the typically colder pockets in the Southern Tier may end up below freezing, while most of the region sticks in the mid 30s.

Cool Weather Remains

Sunshine early on Mother’s Day will quickly be replaced by a deck of clouds moving in from the south. Some sunshine may filter through the clouds at first, but by midday, the overcast should be thick.

High temperatures will push into the mid 50s with light south and southwest winds.

Late in the afternoon, rain showers will move in from the south and should overspread the region for the evening and overnight.

The heaviest rain will fall across the Southern Tier, where a half-inch or more will be possible. Meanwhile, north of I-90, rain amounts will be minimal.

The rain should move out by Monday morning, leaving a mix of sun and clouds for the rest of the day. The sunshine will be countered by north winds, keeping temperatures locked to the mid 50s.

Tuesday will be cooler with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s. A disturbance will bring clouds and scattered showers, especially in the afternoon.

Wednesday looks quite sunny, though some clouds may be possible later in the day. Highs will remain cool, reaching the mid 50s.

Thursday may be able to get a bit warmer as south winds blow ahead of the next system. How much sun shines will probably determine how warm it gets. Right now, upper 50s are expected. Rain showers will become possible late in the day.

Friday and Saturday next weekend look showery with highs continuing to hold in the 50s. After that, though, a substantial warm up should begin to take place.
