High pressure brings sunshine, some dry weather today

Wednesday-Thursday Weather

An area of high pressure has built into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions and is pushing the slow-moving low from the last several days away from the Finger Lakes.

The final clouds associated with the low are on the eastern doorstep of the Finger Lakes, but almost all the area is starting out with sunny skies instead. This will continue throughout the day today as the high moves overhead.

Of course, the usual small fair-weather clouds will mix with the sunshine, but no precipitation is expected from any of these clouds, and they should not block much of the sun.

With the high still to the west, and the low meandering to our east, northwest winds will set up today. These winds will not be overly strong, with speeds around or just over 5 mph. Top gusts should be under 20 mph.

Temperatures will be seasonable today with highs in the upper 70s and a few low 80s. Most areas should be within a degree or two of 80 degrees.

Skies will clear this evening as the daytime heating is lost. Temperatures will fall quickly, with 60s holding on in the north and 50s starting to appear to the south. Overnight lows will get as cool as the mid 50s across the Southern Tier. Some areas of fog will be possible.

The high pressure will pass overhead early Thursday and off the New Jersey coast Thursday afternoon. Winds will be light and variable as a result.

Skies will be sunny, again mixing with fair weather clouds. The clouds tomorrow will grow larger than today, and a few scattered afternoon showers or small thunderstorms are possible. Not everywhere will see rain, but a small cluster or two could track through the region.

Temperatures on Thursday will be similar to today, mostly sticking around 80 degrees.

Continued Rain Chances

On Friday, a cold front will drop southeast across the region. A few showers ahead of the front will be possible late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase during the late morning and midday hours. Numerous storms are expected throughout the afternoon and even into the early evening. Much like the last few days, there may be many storm cells, but the individual cells will be hit or miss.

There is a small chance for a few of the storms to have some gusty winds. Widespread severe weather is not anticipated, though.

Temperatures will be a degree or two cooler on Friday thanks to the rain and clouds with highs in the upper 70s.

A few showers will linger through Friday night with a slight increase in coverage early Saturday morning. Any rain that falls will be light and brief. The afternoon will dry out with a mix of sun and clouds.

Cooler air will move in on light north winds, holding afternoon highs to the low and mostly mid 70s.

Sunday and Monday will both have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures increasing. Highs on Sunday should return to the mid 80s. Monday will be a degree or two warmer, which could push some pockets into the upper 80s.

Both days do have a chance for rain, but Monday looks to be just a minimal chance for a stray shower over the far southeastern corner of the region. Sunday also has low chances, but over the entire area, so I included the showers icon on Sunday, but not Monday.

Another front should move in towards Tuesday next week with showers and thunderstorms. These may last until or hold off until Wednesday. There is at least a chance for some cool air behind this front, but most likely, temperatures will at least remain in the 70s.
