Weekend Weather Forecast
A cold front moved through the Finger Lakes during the overnight hours, but temperatures are still well above average this morning.
Most of the Finger Lakes region is starting Friday out in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. Thick clouds and cool west-southwest winds will counteract the daytime heating cycle, and temperatures will not move much today.
Afternoon highs will generally be near or just above 40 degrees, but some higher elevations may not get back above 40 degrees.
Wind speeds will be 10-15 mph, but locally stronger in the Batavia to Rochester to Dansville area. Wind gusts should be near 30 mph for most of the area, but 35-45 in the aforementioned northwestern and western areas.
Clouds will remain plentiful, and an occasional spit of rain or stray flurry cannot be ruled out. Winds will turn to the northwest tonight, leading to a spray of lake effect flurries southeast of Lake Ontario.
The snow showers will persist through the evening and overnight, with a coating to an inch falling in localized areas. Temperatures will drop to the mid 20s by Saturday morning.
Lingering snow showers early in the morning will dissipate as winds begin to shift back to the southwest. Clouds will be replaced with sunshine, and much of Saturday afternoon should have clear, blue skies. The afternoon wind speeds will be light, with speeds under 5 mph.
Temperatures on Saturday will be cooler than recent and upcoming days, but still a few degrees above average for this time of the year. Look for highs in the mid 30s, with nighttime temperatures falling back into the 20s.
Low pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast will try to spread a few clouds in for Sunday, but these should mostly be thin and will allow at least partial sunshine through. Northern and western areas may see few of these clouds.
South winds in the morning will go nearly calm for the afternoon. Warmer air will be moving in nonetheless, and with the sunshine, temperatures in the mid and upper 40s are likely.
Warm Week Ahead
Monday will be a dry day even as a subtle, weak cold front moves through the region.
This front should have some clouds, but periods of sunshine are also expected. Highs should again reach into the mid and upper 40s with mainly light winds.
The front will move through later Monday or Monday evening with a shift in the wind to the west and a slight increase in wind speed. Temperatures Monday night will back into the mid 20s once more.
Tuesday looks mostly sunny with northwest winds early, turning to south winds late. The cold front Monday night will only dent the daytime highs slightly, and many areas should still reach the mid 40s.
South winds increase Tuesday night and become a bit blustery by Wednesday. Warm air will surge into the region with highs well into the 50s expected on Wednesday. Scattered showers will be possible, but widespread rain looks like likely on Wednesday.
Thursday looks windier, wetter, and warmer. It is a bit too soon to trust the specifics on the models, but highs should again be well into the 50s and some places breaking 60 degrees is not out of the question.
A cold front will move through Thursday night into early Friday, with blustery northwest winds eventually resulting. Temperatures will drop into the 30s for Friday and Saturday and some lake effect snow may bring some localized light accumulations.
The models become more chaotic and uncertain beyond next weekend, but still favor at least periods of above average temperatures.
