Pattern Transition
A cold front is slowly working its way across the Finger Lakes region this morning.
After the busyness of the weather over the last few days associated with this weather system, the frontal passage is ironically subtle today. Clouds will be plentiful, but rain will be hard to come by and temperatures will only have a small initial reaction to the front.
The best chance for some stray showers will be across the southeastern Finger Lakes, roughly along and right of an Elmira to Ithaca to Syracuse line. Even most of these areas should remain dry throughout the day, though.
Temperatures are dropping about five degrees with the frontal passage, from around 60 degrees to the mid 50s. Much of the day will be spent in the mid 50s, though some higher elevations may be a touch cooler, while a few urban areas in the Southern Tier may remain in the upper 50s.
Winds will be light today as they turn to the northwest with speeds near to just over 5 mph. Gusts will be a gentle 15-20 mph.
The clouds may gradually break up a little overnight but will still be plentiful. Winds will turn more westerly while maintaining their same speeds. Cooler air will build in, but will not overwhelm the region with nighttime lows in the mid and upper 30s.
Incoming high pressure will try to push the clouds away on Friday, but with mixed results. Northern areas have a decent chance of clearing out, while southern areas may remain cloudy much of the day. For most of the Finger Lakes, it will probably be a little of both cloudiness and sunshine, with more clouds early on and more sun in the afternoon.
Northwest winds will strengthen, with speeds of 10-15 mph and gusts of 25-35 mph. The strongest winds will be in Wayne, northern Cayuga, and Onondaga counties. A few gusts over 35 mph will be possible in those areas.
Temperatures on Friday will work their way into the mid 40s, which for this time of the year is now slightly below average.
Weather This Weekend, Next Week
Sunshine will rule the weekend with just a few thin clouds from time to time, especially on Saturday.
With few clouds, precipitation will be unheard of in the area.
Skies should clear out Friday night, allowing temperatures to dip into the mid 20s by Saturday morning. Afternoon temperatures will rise about twenty degrees to a high in the mid 40s.
Winds on Saturday will be from the north-northwest, but light, with speeds near or under 5 mph. The wind should become calm Saturday evening.
With skies remaining clear through the night, temperatures will again reach the mid 20s by early Sunday morning.
Easter Sunday will be full of sunshine and nearly calm winds. Temperatures will be mainly influenced by the sunshine and should reach the low and mid 50s.
Warmer air will steadily move in thereafter. Monday should see highs in the mid 60s, while Tuesday rises to the upper 60s. Afternoon highs should be in the 70s at least Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next week, if not into the weekend as well.
All throughout next week, it is expected to remain quiet and dry. No precipitation is expected until later in the weekend or the following week.
Winds will remain light, which will slightly counterbalance the brushfire risk due to the warm, sunny weather and daily relative humidity values in the 20-40 percent range.
