Scattered showers to start the week

Monday-Wednesday Showers

Scattered showers are in the forecast for the first half of the week before some dry weather builds into the Finger Lakes.

High pressure over New England will move east over the Atlantic Ocean today. Behind the high, falling pressures and a broad southerly flow of moisture will take over.

Already, some scattered showers have developed in this regime over north-central Pennsylvania this morning and are drifting northward.

Scattered showers will increase through the morning, especially across the southeastern half of the region. A continued spread northward will occur during the afternoon.

There will be areas that get missed by most of the rain today. Other areas may see some steadier periods of showers. A few rumbles of thunder and briefly heavy rain also cannot be ruled out. Generally speaking, the further south and east, the greater the chances for rain.

South and southeast winds will be gentle with speeds near or under 5 mph. Much of the day will be mostly cloudy, with the best chance for sunshine being early this morning. Afternoon temperatures will top out in the low and mid 70s with dewpoints rising into the 60s.

Scattered showers will continue this evening and overnight, resulting in a much milder night with lows in the low and mid 60s.

Tuesday will also have scattered showers about, but overall, the amount of rain looks less than today. Showers will be more sporadic, and many more areas will not see rain tomorrow compared to today.

Southerly winds will persist with speeds just over 5 mph. Temperatures will nudge a bit warmer, with many areas into the upper 70s. A few urban areas, such as Syracuse, Dansville, and Elmira, may get to 80 degrees.

A cold front will move through the area on Wednesday, bringing some scattered showers once again. Temperatures will be knocked down to the low 70s with breezy northwest winds behind the front.

Overall, none of these next three days looks to be a washout, with the rain staying mainly light and sporadic. While a few pockets that see a thunderstorm today may end up with over an inch of rain, most areas should see less than a half-inch over the three days, and some areas may see under a tenth of an inch.

Dry Pattern

High pressure will build in for the end of the week. Thursday will turn mostly sunny and a bit cool as the high builds in.

Winds will be northerly on Thursday, but not as blustery as on Wednesday. Look for high temperatures to top out in the upper 60s and low 70s.

The high will pass overhead Thursday night with calm winds and clear skies. This will probably result in the coolest night yet this season, with widespread mid and upper 40s across the southern half of the region and lows around or just above 50 in the north and along the lake shores.

Friday will remain mostly sunny with nearly calm winds. Simply losing the north wind from Thursday will allow afternoon highs to reach a few degrees higher, reaching, on average, the mid 70s.

The weekend is a bit less certain with a few rain showers possible, mainly late Saturday into Sunday. There is at least an equal, if not greater, chance that it will remain dry, however.

Temperatures will start to warm more notably with highs at least around 80 on Saturday and into the low 80s on Sunday.

Dry, warm weather will persist for much of next week as well. The best chance for rain looks to be late in the week, towards the second weekend of September. Temperatures should be into the 80s throughout the week, and there could even be a chance at flirting with 90 degrees in some of the typically warmer areas.
