Early Week Weather

The weather system that brought rain, then snow to the area yesterday has pushed off to the east.

In its wake, a northerly flow of cool air has set up over the Finger Lakes. This has given rise to some localized lake effect snow showers this morning.

Scattered flurries will continue through the morning and into the midday hours before dissipating early this afternoon.

The rest of the day should be mostly cloudy, with just a small chance for a brief glimpse of sun before it slips below the horizon.

Winds will be a bit blustery today, but not too strong. Expect wind speeds near or slightly over 10 mph with top gusts around 25 mph. Over time, the wind will shift slightly from the north to the northwest.

Temperatures will only rise a few degrees today, with most areas seeing highs in the low and mid 30s.

Tonight, the cloud cover is somewhat uncertain, but with winds turning calm, then picking back up from the southeast, the influence of Lake Ontario will be reduced, then removed. I think there should be at least a few breaks in the clouds as a result.

Nighttime temperatures will drop back into the mid 20s by sunrise Tuesday. A few cooler pockets will be possible in Cortland County and surrounding areas.

Tuesday will not have any precipitation. A deck of thinner clouds high in the atmosphere will pass through. Some limited sunshine may filter through the clouds.

Southeast winds will remain around 5 mph, nudging high temperatures into the mid 30s with a few warmer pockets, mainly north of the Thruway and in the broad valleys from Owego to Bath.

Wind speeds will increase slightly Tuesday night and temperatures should hold around or slightly below 30 degrees overnight.

Wednesday has a decent chance for some sunshine, with highs increasing to around 40 degrees.

Late Week and Weekend Weather

Outside of the flurries this morning, the best chance for a little precipitation will come Thursday and Friday. Neither day looks to have heavy or particularly widespread precipitation, though.

Both rain and snow showers will be possible on both days. Any snow that falls should not really accumulate at all.

Thursday looks like the warmer day, with temperatures rising to near 40 degrees again. Winds will be light from the southwest.

Friday is a bit less certain in the temperature department, but highs should make it to the mid 30s. If temperatures trend any cooler, though, all precipitation on Friday will end up as snow showers.

At some point during Friday, the wind will swing around to the northwest and increase. Wind speeds may be near 10 mph, but gusts will remain well under 30 mph.

Temperatures will settle into a cooler pattern by the weekend, with morning lows in near 20 degrees and afternoon highs around 30 degrees both Saturday and Sunday.

Both days should also have a mix of sun and clouds.

Quiet weather will stretch into next week as well with few chances for precipitation. Temperatures will gradually warm, but probably will not break into the 40s until late in the week.

I continue to monitor the longer range patterns which show a period of cold weather later in February, possibly lingering into March. This has been a consistent feature on the longer range models for weeks among different models, which adds a little confidence to what is usually not much more than low probability speculation. Time will tell.

Thank you for the well wishes over the weekend while I was dealing with COVID. I feel better today than I did yesterday, and better yesterday than I did on Saturday.
