Light Precipitation
A weak weather system will pass through the region tonight and early Friday, increasing the chances for light precipitation.
Clouds ahead of this system are already solidly in place across the Finger Lakes this morning. The clouds and a light southwest wind have temperatures starting off well into the 30s.
Much of the daytime will be cloudy and quiet. There will be spits of rain here and there, but nothing widespread or heavy is expected. Most of the time, it will remain dry.
Temperatures will top out ranging from the upper 30s in some higher elevations to the low 40s near the lakes and especially in the broad valleys of the Southern Tier.
Precipitation chances will increase through the evening and into the overnight. Both rain and snow showers will be possible with temperatures in the mid 30s until the predawn hours. Then, snow will be more likely as temperatures slip into the low 30s.
Winds will remain from the southwest during the daytime hours today with speeds of 5-10 mph. Wind speeds will drop late in the afternoon and may go calm for a time early this evening. The wind will then turn to the north-northwest with speeds around 5 mph overnight.
Friday will see occasional snow showers, which may mix with rain in some of the warmest areas. Precipitation will be more plentiful during the morning, but a few spits will remain into the afternoon.
No snow accumulation is expected outside of a localized light dusting, mostly in the hours just before and just after sunrise on Friday.
North and north-northwest winds will continue on Friday with speeds increasing to around 10 mph. Top gusts will be around 25 mph.
The wind will keep temperatures from rising much with highs in the low 30s in higher elevations and the mid 30s elsewhere.
Prolonged Dry Stretch
The precipitation we see today and tomorrow will likely be the only precipitation we see for the next week. Not only will it be dry, but there are plenty of opportunities for sunshine as well.
Saturday will likely start out with some clouds, but sunshine should increase throughout the day. During the afternoon, many areas will have mostly sunny skies.
The cloud cover is a bit less certain on Sunday as winds may align for some lake effect clouds at times. However, if winds aren’t just right, it could end up mostly sunny.
Mostly sunny skies are expected for Monday and possibly Tuesday as well. A few clouds may return Wednesday.
A few showers may start to be possible late next week, but the better chance for precipitation will come next weekend. Obviously, it is much too far out to pinpoint any details.
With the dry and sunny weather, temperatures will not be overly cold… but this will not be a big warm up, either.
Morning lows will remain in the 20s throughout this time period, with mid 20s Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings. Lows will be closer to 20 degrees for the middle of next week.
Afternoon highs will stick to the mid 30s on Saturday before bouncing up to near 40 on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday will then each lose a couple of degrees as temperatures slide back toward the mid 30s.
By the middle of the week, temperatures will start to warm again with upper 30s Wednesday and low 40s Thursday.
As the weather turns more unsettled late in the week, temperatures will continue to nose upward with highs reaching the mid and upper 40s. Temperatures look as though they will quickly retreat after next weekend.
