Eclipse Cloud Cover Forecast
Thin clouds ahead of a warm front are streaming into the Finger Lakes this morning.
Satellite imagery early this morning confirms what has been showing on the models: the thin clouds will turn thicker as the day goes on, including during the key moments of the eclipse during the mid afternoon.
Accompanying the clouds this morning is an area of rain showers moving through northeastern Ohio. These showers should dissipate this morning, but a few spits of rain will be possible in our area, again including the mid afternoon.
Within the broader area of cloudiness, there should be some thin spots and even a few breaks in the clouds.
Also, the models can sometimes underestimate the speed of incoming clouds and precipitation associated with a warm front. While this bias is more pronounced with stronger weather systems such as winter storms, even an hour of difference could lead to more breaks in the cloud cover.
Overall, no, conditions are not looking great for the eclipse in our region. However, there are a couple of pathways to seeing some of the eclipse, so not all hope is completely lost. There is no one part of the Finger Lakes or the surrounding areas that will have a significantly higher or lower chance for clouds.
Like yesterday, I tried my best to match the blog photo above to what I suspect the clouds may look like during the mid-afternoon, but I could not quite capture my expectations with the photos I had in my library. Today’s photo may look a bit too gloomy, but there will certainly be periods of the day that look like that.
Outside of the cloud cover concerns and the few stray showers, the weather will be tranquil today. Light south winds will blow at just 5 mph. Temperatures are a bit tricky with the eclipse interrupting the peak hours for daytime heating, but highs should at least make it into the mid and upper 50s, if not near 60 degrees.
Clouds will depart this evening, well after the eclipse concludes, leaving a period of mostly clear skies. New clouds will be arriving by dawn Tuesday, however. Overnight lows will only be in the mid 40s.
Warm, then Showery
Temperatures will soar on Tuesday and many areas will see their warmest day yet in 2024. Most places should be near or above 70 degrees, even higher elevations. Mid 70s will be possible in the valleys of the Southern Tier and the Genesee Valley.
Skies will be a mix of some sunshine and areas of clouds. Overall, the cloud cover should be a bit less and a bit thinner than today, but there will again be plenty of clouds. Winds will remain from the south with speeds only slightly stronger than today.
Scattered showers will move in Tuesday night and into Wednesday, possibly with a few isolated thunderstorms as well. Most of the rain on Wednesday will be during the morning hours, though a few stray showers in the afternoon cannot be ruled out, especially to the south and east.
Overnight temperatures Tuesday night will stay in the mid 50s and highs on Wednesday will be in the mid 60s.
Thursday should also rise to the mid 60s with another round of scattered showers. Showers will especially be possible early in the morning and again later in the afternoon.
Low pressure will slowly track northeast across the area Friday into Saturday with continued chances for rain. It should not end up like last week with constant precipitation for several days, but more on and off periods of shorter duration rain.
There is some wind potential late in the week, especially on Saturday. How strong the winds may be will determine the strength, speed, and path of the low.
Temperatures will be a bit cooler with this system, with highs in the upper 50s on Friday and near 50 degrees on Saturday.
The weather next week is highly variable on the models with a wide range of possibilities. The overall trend, however, is for mild to warm (if not very warm) temperatures and several chances for rainfall.

Thank you so much. We really appreciate the effort you put in everyday and especially today.
To quote my husband, “I would just as soon not see it from here (Tupper Rd, W Danby) as after a drive.”
