Rain Returns
A series of frontal boundaries and low pressure systems will keep our weather active for the foreseeable future beginning today.
A weak cold front will slowly cross the region today. Already some showers are out and about in the region this morning associated with the front.
Shower activity should increase regionwide this morning before focusing on the southeastern half of the region during the afternoon. Areas such as Elmira, Ithaca, and Cortland may see on and off bouts of rain for much of the day.
There will be a small chance for a couple of thunderstorms this afternoon in those same areas.
Temperatures will remain quite warm, just not as warm as yesterday. Look for afternoon highs mainly in the mid 60s, with the usual variations above and below this based on topography and urbanization.
Winds will not be much of a factor today with speeds under 5 mph. South winds will eventually turn to the northwest with the passage of the front.
The evening should be mostly quiet, but the next area of rain will move in after midnight. This will be a widespread, mainly light rain, which should push north during the early and mid-morning hours on Thursday.
It will remain mild overnight with lows in the low 50s.
Once the rain early Thursday moves out, it will only remain dry for a few hours. Showers will move back in during the afternoon with a notable increase in wind speed as well. On and off showers and a few thunderstorms will continue through the evening and overnight hours.
The wind will become strong Thursday afternoon but will peak during Thursday night. Southeast winds will be sustained near 20 mph with gusts frequently approaching 45 mph. Locally stronger gusts are certainly possible, especially if any thunderstorms develop.
Temperatures will increase on Thursday compared to today, but will not be as warm as yesterday. Afternoon highs should be in the upper 60s with a few warmer pockets reaching 70 degrees. Nighttime temperatures will be in the low and mid 50s.
Springtime Weather
Early Friday morning, another cold front will move through the region. Winds will turn to the southwest, and while still breezy, will not be as strong as Thursday night. Top gusts should remain under 40 mph, with the strongest winds being found across the southern portions of the region.
There will likely be a few spits of rain here and there on Friday, but much of the time will likely end up dry. Temperatures will take a hit, but will still be comfortable, with highs in the mid and upper 50s.
The parent low pressure system responsible for the rain and wind Thursday and Friday will pass nearly overhead on Saturday. This should lead to another uptick in rain showers and a reinforcement of cooler air.
Saturday’s winds will turn to the west-northwest and increase again, nearly matching Thursday night with gusts of 40-45 mph likely. Temperatures will mainly stick to the 40s with a few low 50s.
A completely new system will approach the area on Sunday, spreading some late showers and possibly thunderstorms into the area. High temperatures will be around 60 degrees.
Temperatures will remain in the 60s, at least, early next week. There will be more chances for rain and potentially thunderstorms.
There is some uncertainty on the days most likely to see rain next week, as well as exactly how warm it will be.
