Mid-Week Weather
High pressure over Canada extends southeast across the Finger Lakes region while a storm system is taking shape over the middle of the country.
Clear skies grace the region this morning and will persist for much of the day today. The best chance for some clouds will come later in the afternoon as some thin clouds begin to move in from the southwest.
Winds will be out of the northwest again today with speeds just a bit lower than yesterday.
Temperatures will be similar to yesterday, with a wide range based on topography and proximity to Lake Ontario. Mid 60s are likely across the broad valleys of the Southern Tier. Most areas will be in the upper 50s to just above 60 degrees. Higher terrain and the Lake Ontario shore will be in the mid 50s.
Clouds will gradually increase and thicken overnight, but no precipitation will fall. Winds will go calm early, then pick back up from the southeast. Most areas will still dip into the 30s overnight, but few if any should drop below 35 degrees.
Rain will make its way toward the Finger Lakes on Wednesday but will encounter dry air associated with the high pressure system. The rain will therefore have a difficult time making it into our region, and some areas may stay dry through sunset. The further south and west, the greater the chance for afternoon showers.
This will also be reflected in the temperatures, with the Syracuse area the warmest in the low and mid 60s. Most of the region will be around 60 degrees, with some higher elevations in the western Southern Tier and Bristol Mountains topping out in the mid 50s.
Rain showers will become more common Wednesday night and should persist off and on throughout Thursday. The morning hours on Thursday will probably see more shower activity than the afternoon, but it will not be until evening that the rain mostly moves out.
Thursday will start with lows in the upper 40s, but afternoon highs will only manage the mid 50s.
Weather This Weekend, Next Week
Winds will turn more southerly on Friday. Despite mostly cloudy skies, this should nudge temperatures into the low 60s.
A cold front will make its way into the area late in the day with some scattered afternoon and evening showers. These should move out overnight with temperatures dropping to the low 40s.
Any sunshine on Saturday should be limited to the very early part of the day. Shortly after sunrise, a blanket of clouds should develop and persist for most of the day. A few spits of rain cannot be ruled out, but most areas look as though they will stay dry.
West-northwest winds will pick up, especially in the morning. Wind speeds will be around 15 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph.
The clouds and winds will hold temperatures down with highs in the mid 50s.
Sunday will also be cloudy, but the wind will be gentler. Nonetheless, temperatures will be cooler, starting out in the mid 30s and reaching a high in the low 50s.
Clearing skies will lead to temperatures Monday morning in the low and mid 30s. Sunshine should be abundant with highs in the mid 50s.
As has been the pattern lately, the early part of next week looks quiet, while the second half of the week looks unsettled.
Temperatures are not expected to move much, with daily highs in the 50s to perhaps low 60s. Nighttime temperatures should mainly be in the 35-45 degree range.
