Sunny Skies
An area of high pressure meandering across the Great Lakes will keep the weather quiet and sunny today.
With the center of the high to our west, winds today will be out of the northwest. The wind speed will also be increased over previous days as the high butts up against a small low over New England.
The result will be quite a bit of sunshine today, but slightly lower temperatures. For most of the region, this will mean highs in the mid and upper 60s. The best chance for low and even mid 70s will be across the Southern Tier.
Wind speeds will peak at around 10 mph this afternoon.
There will be some occasional patches of mainly thin clouds, but for the most part, today will be sunny. Partly cloudy to mostly clear skies will continue tonight as well.
Nighttime temperatures will be cooler tonight with widespread mid 40s for overnight lows.
Friday should see an uptick in cloud cover. Again, though, many of the clouds may be thin and at least some filtered sunshine is still likely for much of the day.
There is a small chance for a few showers or even thunderstorms in far western areas (west of I-390) late in the afternoon or early in the evening.
High pressure will be to our east on Friday, turning winds to the south-southeast. Wind speeds will be lower, coming in around 5 mph.
The wind shift will push temperatures back up with widespread mid and upper 70s for highs. A few urban valley locations in the Southern Tier, such as Elmira-Corning and Dansville, may reach the low 80s.
Clouds, and the chances for rain, will gradually increase Friday night with overnight lows in the low and mid 50s.
Unsettled Weekend Weather
The increase in clouds and showers will be associated with a slow-moving front that will creep across the region on Saturday.
There is still some uncertainty in the speed and timing of the front, but the most likely scenario is for rain showers to increase Saturday morning and become numerous Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.
The chances for thunder look low, with the best chances coming Friday Night or very early Saturday.
The rain on Saturday may become steady for a time during the afternoon, but overall will be on and off. Most areas will see roughly around a half an inch of precipitation, but locally higher amounts are possible, especially if there are any thunderstorms.
South winds will be steady near 10 mph on Saturday, but temperatures will only top out in the low 60s thanks to the clouds and rainfall.
Another uncertainty is how long the rain will continue. At least Sunday morning should have some showers around, but it is not out of the question that much of Sunday turns out showery, too. Currently, I favor a scenario that clears the rain mostly out of the area by the afternoon, but with minimal sunshine.
Winds will not really shift with the frontal passage, remaining southerly on Sunday with a slight uptick in wind speed. As long as the rain departs, highs should at least reach the mid 60s. The further east, the greater the likelihood of lower temperatures. The further west, the greater the likelihood of warmer temperatures.
Another area of high pressure will build in for Monday and Tuesday with dry conditions and at least partly cloudy skies.
Temperatures will return to around 70 degrees on Monday and into the low 70s on Tuesday.
The next system will move in for the middle of next week, starting with a chance for showers and storms on Wednesday. Thursday may also have thunderstorms, but should be a wet day one way or another.
Temperatures will fall behind this system next weekend and into the following week with highs in the 60s favored.
