Friday-Sunday Weather
Much of the holiday weekend will be pleasant across the Finger Lakes, with good weather for outdoor activities.
High pressure over the region today will keep skies sunny from start to finish. Very few, if any, clouds are expected today.
Northwest winds will increase to near or over 10 mph by this afternoon, especially for the northeastern half of the region. A few gusts in and around Onondaga County will be near 30 mph.
Temperatures will mainly be in the mid and upper 70s with a few low 80s in the Southern Tier.
Evening skies will remain clear before a few thin clouds move in overnight. Overnight lows will be in the low 50s but with some colder pockets likely.
Saturday will have a mix of clouds and some breaks of sun. Light south and southwest winds will blow, pushing afternoon highs into the low 80s.
A few showers and storms will pop up in western NY late Saturday afternoon and may move into the Finger Lakes around sunset. These will remain scattered into the early evening before dissipating, so not all areas will see rain. An isolated stronger storm cannot be ruled out.
A stray shower will be possible through the overnight, but Sunday should turn out dry with a mix of sun and clouds. Winds will be light and variable.
Sunday’s temperatures will start out in the mid and upper 50s with a high around 80 degrees.
Stormy Monday, Unsettled Week
A complicated set up will unfold over the region on Monday as an early morning warm front and late day cold front move through. Clouds and precipitation left over from storms over the Ohio Valley on Sunday may further complicate the forecast.
Low pressure will track from the Upper Great Lakes into southeastern Canada on Monday. This low, at a minimum, will kick up some blustery non-thunderstorm winds on Monday. Winds will be from the south with speeds near or over 15 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph.
The wind profiles above the surface look favorable for severe thunderstorms, but the main question will be how much fuel storms get to work with.
If the morning is rainy and cloudy, there may be little for the storms to energize with. If there is more sunshine, however, conditions could become more favorable.
With Monday being the first big outdoor holiday of the season, any severe thunderstorm potential will have an extra level of impact and concern.
Please continue to monitor the forecast over the weekend and especially on Monday. I will likely at least have updates on Sunday and Monday.
A new area of low pressure will develop along the Mid-Atlantic coast in the wake of this cold front. This low will meander for a couple of days, keeping our weather unsettled and cool.
Showers will be possible Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week, though Wednesday looks like the prime day for rain.
Temperatures will retreat to the low 70s on Tuesday, with mid 60s at best Wednesday and Thursday.
The weather should dry out and warm back up late in the week and next weekend with highs at least near if not into the 70s.

Do you still need pictures for your calendar or website?
Meteorologist Drew Montreuil
Yes! I am always collecting photos… the need is never ending! It is actually very rare that I get to use a blog photo that I haven’t used before… but do have a large enough library for some conditions that I can go months or even years before repeating. Today’s picture, for example, I last used in August 2020. But I’m always looking for fresh, unique photos… and of course top photos for the calendar! Anyone can upload any season/weather type at any time at flxweather.com/photos
