Cool Air

With a strong low pressure north of Maine and a cold front along the Atlantic coast, cool air is building into the Finger Lakes region.

A smaller low pressure system is caught up in the circulation of the larger low and will move east across Ohio and Pennsylvania today.

This low will keep clouds mostly in place with a few showers in the Southern Tier. Most of the rain should stay south of the state line, though. For areas near the southern tips of the lakes and northward, no rain is expected today.

There may be some occasional gaps in the clouds, especially along and north of I-90 this afternoon.

Temperatures will mainly stick to the 60s with the best chance for hitting 70 degrees being in Syracuse and from Elmira to Binghamton. Higher elevations will be in the mid, even low 60s for highs.

Tonight, skies will gradually clear, allowing temperatures to fall into the 40s. Most areas will see mid 40s, but colder pockets in the western Southern Tier will be in the low 40s or even upper 30s.

After a sunny start to Thursday, fair weather clouds will become numerous during the daytime heating cycle. No showers are expected.

Temperatures tomorrow will be a degree or two cooler than today with highs mainly in the mid 60s. North-northwest winds will be as high as 10 mph with gusts to 25 mph.

Clouds will disappear late in the day, leading to another clear and cold night. Like the daytime highs, nighttime temperatures will be a degree or two below tonight. Some low 40s may show up in central New York, while there is a greater chance for some upper 30s in Steuben and Allegany counties.

Weather This Weekend, Next Week

Friday will be mostly sunny with light northwest winds. High temperatures should rebound a bit with highs around 70 degrees.

Friday Night will again drop well into the 40s, but overall, the weekend will see warming temperatures.

Saturday, with a gradual increase in clouds, will reach a high close to the seasonal averages in the mid 70s.

Sunday will be warmer, with morning lows in the mid 50s and afternoon highs in the upper 70s. There will be an increase in clouds and some scattered showers, but the day shouldn’t be a washout.

Temperatures on Monday will hold steady, though morning lows may be a touch warmer with more places sticking to the upper 50s. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 70s. No rain is expected with a mix of sun and clouds.

A small system will pass through around Tuesday with some showers and storms. Temperatures will start the day around 60 degrees and warm to around 80 degrees.

There will be additional chances for showers and thunderstorms late next week with temperatures staying warm and humidity increasing. Daily high temperatures next week should be in the lower half of the 80s.

Which days will be most favored for rain, and whether or not any of the thunderstorms will be strong, is too far out to tell.
