Cool and Cloudy
The large low pressure area over eastern Canada that has been keeping our weather unsettled for days will finally exit the region.
A reinforcing shot of cool air behind the low moved in behind last evening’s rain and will make for a cool day today. In fact, it is probably safe to say that it will not be this cool again until fall.
Higher elevations will not escape the 50s today while the warmest temperatures, in the mid 60s, will be found in the Southern Tier, near Syracuse, and near Rochester. Most areas will be near or slightly above 60 degrees.
While chilly and about fifteen degrees below average, this is not at all abnormal for June. In fact, every year going back to 1997, Ithaca has had at least 1 June daily high temperature below 65 degrees.
Skies will be cloudy throughout the day with only a rare peek of sunshine. A few spits of rain or brief showers will also be possible, but most areas will stay dry today.
Winds will be from the northwest at around 10 mph.
There will be little change tonight, with clouds skies, a few spits of drizzle, and cool temperatures. Overnight lows will be in the mid and upper 40s for the southern half of the region, with low 50s in the north.
High pressure will start to build in on Tuesday, but there will still be enough cool air and moisture trapped beneath the high pressure to keep skies mostly cloudy. Again, a stray spit of rain cannot be ruled out, but chances are even lower than today.
Winds will be under 5 mph but still from the northwest. Temperatures should be a little warmer, with highs in the mid and upper 50s.
The clouds may break up some in time for sunset, with partly cloudy skies overnight. Winds will be nearly calm but should become southerly by dawn. Lows will be in the upper 40s and low 50s.
Quickly Warming
The sun will return on Wednesday, mixing at times with some thin clouds along with daytime heating fair weather clouds. There will only be the smallest of chances for an isolated minute or two of raindrops.
Winds will remain light with speeds maxing around 5 mph. The morning’s south wind will turn westerly for the afternoon.
It will be enough to jump temperatures to a high in the mid and upper 70s.
Despite clear skies, overnight lows will stick to the mid and upper 50s Wednesday night.
More substantial south and southwest winds will build in on Thursday with speeds around or just over 10 mph.
With a mix of sun and clouds, these winds will spike temperatures into the mid 80s. Temperatures Thursday night will be in the 60s with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms.
A cold front will move through on Friday, likely during the morning. Rain and a few thunderstorms will accompany the front. If the front is delayed to later in the day Friday, the chances for thunderstorms may increase.
Temperatures will be in the upper 70s on Friday, retreating to the low 70s on Saturday. It will be a one-day retreat, with highs back in the upper 70s on Sunday. Both weekend days look dry.
Hot weather is expected to build in for next week with several chances of reaching 90 degrees possible.
