High Pressure
The low pressure system responsible for yesterday’s scattered showers and storms is departing eastern Canada, opening the door for high pressure to build into the Upper Great Lakes.
Between these two systems, a northwest wind will develop over the Finger Lakes today. The wind will be breezy, but not too strong, with speeds up to 10 mph and gusts of 20-25 mph.
The wind will import cooler, less humid air into the region.
Afternoon highs will top out in the mid and upper 70s, while dewpoints will steadily retreat, reaching the 50s during the afternoon.
Skies will be a mix of sun and fair weather clouds with almost no rain expected. A stray, very brief spit of rain cannot be totally ruled out, particularly in the northeastern quadrant of the region this morning and again early this evening.
Skies will become mostly clear with time this evening and overnight. The northwest wind will remain in place but will be light.
It will be a comfortable night with lows in the mid and upper 50s. A few colder pockets may reach the low 50s, mainly in the western Southern Tier.
Friday will have abundant sunshine with just a few fair weather clouds.
Light northwest and north winds will persist, keeping temperatures and humidity in check. Afternoon highs will probably be a degree or two warmer today, with more upper 70s, fewer mid 70s, and a few urban areas hitting 80 degrees.
Dewpoints will stick to the 50s, which will help contribute to another cool night beneath clear skies. Overnight lows will be similar to tonight, if not a degree or two cooler.
Weekend Weather and Next Week’s Forecast
High pressure will move in overhead by Saturday before skirting to the southeast on Sunday.
Both days will have sunny skies with just a few clouds mixing in on Saturday. Sunday should turn out mostly sunny.
Winds will be nearly calm on Saturday. Just removing the northerly flow will bump temperatures up with highs in the low and mid 80s.
On Sunday, a light south wind will take hold, pushing temperatures to the mid and upper 80s. A few urban areas may flirt with 90 degrees.
Dewpoints will rise to the upper 50s on Saturday and the low 60s on Sunday, which is still quite comfortable for most.
The hottest upcoming day will be on Monday. High pressure will still hold on to the region, bringing one final day of dry, sunny weather.
Temperatures will top out in the upper 80s and low 90s. Dewpoints will start to make it feel muggy as they rise into the mid and upper 60s.
There may be a small chance for a late day or especially nighttime shower or storm, but it is too far out to be certain of any details.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday, however. Again, it is early for details, but I do not see anything overly concerning on the models as far as severe weather is concerned.
Showers will likely linger into Wednesday, though the chances for thunderstorms seem lower.
Temperatures both Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the low and mid 80s with high humidity.
This will be a consistent theme as the calendar flips to August, with warm, very humid weather likely to persist at least through next weekend, but quite possibly well into the following week.
