Showers End
A broad area of low pressure is moving through the region this morning with some rain showers.
On and off spits of rain will continue through the morning and into the midday hours. During the late morning and early afternoon, a few heavier showers may develop with a couple rumbles of thunder.
When not raining, which will be most of the time, it will be cloudy. South winds will turn to the northwest as the low passes by. Wind speeds will be in the 5-10 mph range.
As the energy from the low departs, slightly less humid air will move in this afternoon. Dewpoints will only drop back into the mid 60s, so it will still feel a bit muggy. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the mid 80s.
Showers should be out of the area no later than the mid-afternoon, but many areas west of Cayuga Lake will be hard pressed to find any rain after noon. Sunshine will gradually increase through the afternoon with mostly clear skies by the end of the day.
Mostly clear skies will persist through the night with lows in the mid and upper 60s.
Thursday will be sunny with fair weather clouds bubbling up during the daytime heating cycle. A stray spit of rain cannot be ruled out, but anything that falls should be very isolated and brief.
Dewpoints will remain in the mid 60s most of Thursday but will rise back toward 70 late in the day. Afternoon highs will be in the mid and upper 80s with the typically warmer urban centers pushing 90 degrees.
Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy Thursday night, though most of the clouds will be thin and high in the atmosphere. Overnight lows will be in the mid and upper 60s again, with most areas generally a degree or two warmer than tonight.
Weekend Weather Forecast
Another poorly defined weather system will move from the Upper Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley on Friday. Precipitation should break out ahead of this system across Pennsylvania.
Here in the Finger Lakes, mainly dry weather is expected on Friday, though a few of the showers may cross the state line and sneak into the Southern Tier.
A slight shift in the position of this system could bring rain closer or push it further away.
Assuming the current projections hold, and our area stays mainly rain-free, expect some sunshine to mix with thin and mid-level clouds.
Afternoon highs in the mid and upper 80s are likely again, with muggy dewpoints in the upper 60s.
Chances for rain and thunderstorms will increase on Saturday, but there remains some uncertainty on how widespread the activity becomes. With a similar overall setup as on Friday, southern areas will again see the higher chances for rain.
With more clouds and showers expected, temperatures should be a bit cooler with highs in the low and mid 80s. Dewpoints, however, will rise, spending most of the day at or above 70.
Sunday is uncertain as well with the unsettled weather starting to pull away. It may end up similar to today, with a few morning showers and improving conditions in the afternoon. Or, if the system lingers, it may end up as a showery day.
Either way, Monday is looking dry with highs in the low 80s and low humidity.
The pattern for the rest of next week will partially depend on upstream thunderstorm development and thus remains highly uncertain at this point.
As a whole, there should be a couple chances for rain with temperatures generally cooler and humidity lower than this week.

Hi Drew, thanks for your work as always! I have a question—I’m supposed to be hosting an outdoor gathering this weekend on the east side of Keuka Lake about ten miles south of Penn Yan. Do you think we have a better chance of avoiding getting rained out on Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon?
Meteorologist Drew Montreuil
Sunday afternoon is looking much drier than Saturday, though not 100% so necessarily.
