High Pressure

A large and dominating high pressure system will keep the weather tranquil throughout the week.

This high is centered nearly overhead, but just to our west this morning. Over the next few days, the high will drift eastward, gradually allowing temperatures to warm up a bit.

For now, though, it is a chilly morning across the Finger Lakes with most areas down into the 40s and a few 30s even showing up.

Full sunshine through the morning hours will help temperatures warm steadily, though a light northwest wind will put a limit on how much it warms.

Expect highs today to reach the mid 70s in the typically warmer valley and urban locations, while higher elevations end up just short of 70 degrees. Most areas will end up at or slightly above 70 degrees this afternoon.

Only a few fair weather clouds will mix with the sunshine this afternoon, quickly dissipating before sunset.

Clear skies will rule the night, but as the high passes to our east, a slight whisper of a south wind will pick up afternoon midnight. That should save a couple of degrees, with lows tonight generally a bit warmer than last night. Many places will still end up in the 40s, though.

There is little to discuss for Wednesday and Thursday. Both days should have mostly sunny skies, light south winds, and warming temperatures.

Highs will be in the mid and upper 70s both days, with the Rochester, Syracuse, and perhaps Dansville areas making a run at 80 degrees on Thursday.

Weekend Weather Forecast

Friday, too, should be sunny and dry. However, clouds will increase during the latter half of the afternoon as high pressure moves further away and low pressure begins to form to our west.

There is a small chance that rain could enter back into the forecast late Friday, but the trend has been for a slower arrival of the rain, so it is more likely that the entire day will be dry.

Temperatures may add another degree or two on Friday, depending on the extent and speed of the cloud cover. Low 80s are likely in the Genesee Valley, near Rochester, and near Syracuse as south winds pick up a little.

Steady south winds will keep temperatures in the 60s Friday night. Wind speeds will increase significantly after sunrise Saturday, with speeds over 15 mph and gusts possibly as high as 40 mph.

Rain will move in slowly from the west on Saturday, falling steadily for a few hours. There may be some thunder and heavy downpours as well.

Currently, the afternoon has a higher chance for rain than the morning, but this remains uncertain.

Temperatures will fall behind this system with highs back into the 60s for Sunday and Monday. Winds will not be too strong, though, and the chances for rain showers are on the low side, but uncertain.

Next week then looks fairly similar to this week, with dry and sunny weather helping temperatures slowly but steadily increase.
