Weekend Weather Forecast

High pressure over far eastern Canada extends southwest through the Finger Lakes region.

This high will keep our weather sunny and dry today, but this prolonged pattern will start to break down this weekend.

For today, morning fog will burn off, leaving mostly sunny skies. A few fair weather clouds will bubble up during the midday and afternoon, and a few thin clouds may start to join in later in the day. For the most part, though, it will just be sunny.

And warm: Highs will once again average out around 80 degrees. All but the higher elevations should at least see 80 degrees, and a few pockets may sneak into the mid 80s, though not higher than 85 degrees.

Winds will be nearly calm with just a whisper of an easterly or southeasterly breeze at times.

Thin clouds will pass through tonight as south winds increase with speeds of 5-10 mph. It will be mild, with lows in the low 60s to the north and upper 50s to the south.

Saturday should start off with a mix of sun and clouds. Some afternoon showers and thunderstorms may pop up, especially over the western half of the region.

How widespread these become is uncertain as the impulse of energy responsible for them will be weak and the atmosphere only marginally supportive of thunderstorms. Severe weather is not expected.

Outside of any storms, skies will stay mixed with highs mostly between 75-80 degrees.

Sunday should be quieter, though a few stray showers may still pop up during the midday and afternoon. Most areas will see very little to no rain on Sunday.

Winds will still be from the south and southeast, but temperatures will be on the decline. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the low and mid 70s.

Weather Pattern Flips

Next week is looking like the opposite of the past two weeks with showery, cooler weather likely.

A dip in the jet stream will move into the Great Lakes, then break off from the main jet stream as an isolated, stalled out low pressure that will meander around the region for most of the week.

The result will be on and off bouts of showers and rain as individual impulses of atmospheric energy rotate around the parent low.

This type of pattern can be frustrating to forecast for, as the small details that ultimately shape the day-to-day weather are often unclear more than 24-48 hours in advance. Timing bouts of rain versus dry periods can become very difficult.

It will be important for those with weather sensitive routines and plans to check in daily for my latest updates and to not just rely on other apps which flip-flop with the latest, inconsistent model data they ingest and display.

At this time, it is best to assume daily rain next week, though there will be some breaks here and there. Most of the rain will be light, but if timing works out, some thunderstorms or downpours may also be possible.

As a whole, temperatures will be held down with this pattern, with highs commonly staying in the 60s. Overnight lows will not change much, though, with the clouds and showers keeping temperatures in the 50s.

It seems likely that this pattern will at least persist into next weekend, but it very well may stick around into early October as well.
