Early Week Weather

An area of low pressure is moving through the Finger Lakes Monday morning.

To the west of the low, widespread rain is falling across western New York. This rain will slide into the Finger Lakes through the morning hours and remain in place much of the afternoon.

Winds will also pick up, coming out of the northwest with speeds around 15 mph and gusts of 30-40 mph.

These winds will bring in colder air and temperatures will likely drop a few degrees over the course of the day, resulting in upper 30s and low 40s this afternoon.

The widespread rain will taper off late, but lake effect showers will quickly fill back in this evening. Almost the area will see just rain, but some higher elevation mixed precipitation or even straight flurries are possible.

Overnight temperatures will range through the 30s with the best chance for temperatures at or below freezing coming in the western Southern Tier and in pockets in and around Cortland County.

Tuesday will have frequent spits and showers of rain as lake enhanced precipitation continues. Late in the day, or the evening, the precipitation should increase as a bundle of atmospheric energy passes through.

Winds will be blustery on Tuesday, still from the northwest, but not as strong as today. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the low and mid 40s.

Showers, with some mixed precipitation or flurries over higher elevations, will continue Tuesday night. Overnight lows will again range throughout the 30s.

Precipitation is expected to wind down Wednesday morning, with a mostly cloudy but mostly dry afternoon. High temperatures will average out in the mid 40s.

Pattern Flip

As cold, cloudy, and dreary as the first half of the week is, the second half looks equally sunny, quiet, and mild, at least during the afternoons.

Skies will begin to clear Wednesday night and should be mostly clear by sunrise Thursday morning. This may allow temperatures to be a couple degrees cooler to start, with an increase in low 30s and a decrease in upper 30s.

Sunny skies will persist through the day and highs will rebound to the mid 50s.

Thursday night will again be cold with low and mid 30s for most areas.

Friday will be sunny with highs breaking into the low 60s.

Nighttime temperatures will then start to warm, too, with Friday night’s lows in the upper 30s.

Saturday will be more of the same, but warmer, with sunshine and highs in the mid 60s at least.

There may be a few clouds by Sunday, but still plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will hold steady in the mid 60s.

This pattern should hold into the first half of next week with temperatures peaking on Tuesday around 70 degrees.

The second half of next week is uncertain, but will probably be a bit cooler with highs returning to the 50s.
