Warming Up…
Another push of warmer air will make its way into the Finger Lakes region over the next couple of days.
Today will still be on the cooler side. Morning temperatures are ranging through the 30s and low 40s to start the day.
There will be plenty of clouds today, though some sunshine will also be poking through or filtered by the clouds. No rain will fall today.
Light south and southeast winds will blow today with speeds at or below 5 mph. Afternoon highs will range through the 50s.
Wind speeds will increase tonight and into Tuesday, still coming from the south. By Tuesday afternoon, higher elevations may see wind speeds up to 15 mph while lower terrain stays near 10 mph.
The wind and continued patches of cloud cover will hold temperatures mostly above 40 degrees tonight. Cold pockets of the Southern Tier may still slip into the upper 30s, as will most of Cortland County and the immediate surrounding areas.
Tuesday will remain rather cloudy. A warm front will bring a band of showers through during the afternoon. The rain should not last too long or be very heavy. The highest rain amounts will be over the northern half of the region, coming in around a quarter of an inch.
Afternoon highs will range from the upper 50s in higher elevations to the mid 60s in the Rochester and Genesee Valley areas. Syracuse, too, may make it into the mid 60s.
Sunshine will continue to struggle, but not be completely blocked out on Wednesday. Thin clouds should filter the sun, but it will again be a dry day.
South and southwest winds will persist, though maybe a touch weaker than on Tuesday. Morning lows will mainly be in the 50s with some mid and upper 40s in the Southern Tier and Cortland County. Afternoon highs will soar well into the 70s.
Thursday will follow suit with morning lows ranging through the 50s and afternoon highs in the mid 70s.
South winds will continue to be blustery, but the daytime hours should remain dry with a mix of clouds and some sun.
… And Cooling Down
A cold front will march through the region Thursday night. With Thursday being Halloween, the big question will be the timing of the rain. Recent trends on the models have been to hold off much of the rain until later in the evening, but it is too close to call at this point.
Regardless, the rain Thursday night does not look overly significant and may end up similar in duration and intensity to Tuesday afternoon’s showers.
Temperatures will take a steady slide starting Thursday night, reaching the mid 50s by Friday morning. The temperature may steady for a few hours before falling again by Friday afternoon, ending up closer to 50 degrees.
A few showers may linger early Friday, but most of the day should be dry. Winds will continue to be blustery, with speeds remaining near or slightly above 10 mph, but these winds will be from the northwest.
By Saturday morning, temperatures will be back into the low and mid 30s. Afternoon highs will reach the low 50s with a mix of sun and clouds and no rain.
Sunday is expected to be similar in terms of temperature and weather conditions.
Winds should be much lighter over the weekend.
Temperatures may climb back into the 60s for a time next week. A more significant weather system is expected with a chance for some more meaningful rainfall.
Cooler will likely move in behind the unsettled weather as the transition from the warm half of the year to the cold half continues to result in up and down temperature swings.
