Early Week Weather
A small weather system moving across eastern Canada brought a few rain showers to the Finger Lakes region overnight.
A weak cold front associated with the low will move through this morning but with little to no additional precipitation. Only stray spits of rain are expected.
The most notable change with the front will be an increase in northwesterly winds. Winds will peak during the midday and afternoon hours with speeds as high as 15 mph and gusts reaching 30 mph at times.
Clouds will mix with some sunshine here and there throughout the day. Some periods may become rather sunny for a time before clouds filter back in.
Temperatures this afternoon will remain on the mild side despite the northwest wind. Look for highs mainly in the mid 50s with both warmer and cooler pockets based on topography.
The wind will weaken this evening with skies remaining mixed. There may be a stray shower or two around in the early evening as well.
Overnight lows will be in the low and mid 30s, though the extent of the cloud cover will determine exactly how cool it gets.
Tuesday will have lighter winds. Skies will again be a mix of sunnier periods and cloudier ones. No rain is expected, though.
Temperatures will be a touch cooler with most areas in the low 50s. Higher elevations will stick to the upper 40s while the valleys of the Southern Tier reach the mid 50s.
By Wednesday, low pressure will begin to take shape near Lake Erie and will strengthen.
This will lead to a mostly cloudy day on Wednesday, with the chances for showers increasing during the afternoon.
Southeast winds will blow and temperatures should jump into the upper 50s.
Active Late Week Weather
The low pressure system will only meander across our region between Wednesday and the weekend, keeping our weather highly unsettled.
However, the details are still rather uncertain as the path of the low will have a large influence not only on when we see precipitation but also how much and even what type.
Steady rain should eventually move in overnight Wednesday night, likely becoming less widespread and less steady Thursday morning.
This should all fall as rain with temperatures Wednesday night staying well in the 40s on the warm side of the low.
This becomes less certain by Thursday morning as cold air wraps into the low and the low itself moves near or over the region.
If there is snow Thursday, the higher elevations will have the best shot at seeing it. Precipitation in mid and lower elevations will likely stay as rain, or at most, mix with a few wet snowflakes at the beginning and end of the day.
There is quite a bit of variety in the path of the low beyond Thursday afternoon, but the low should hang around the region.
This may lead to continuing bouts of showery precipitation on Friday. Again, some of this could fall as snow, but rain is more likely.
By Saturday and Sunday, the precipitation should become more spotty and less significant.
This system should bring some substantial precipitation with liquid totals around an inch on average, but possibly more. Some higher elevations could see some snow accumulation, but this remains much less likely at lower elevations.
Winds with this system will peak Wednesday night into Thursday with some gusts over 30 mph likely. Winds will remain breezy into the weekend.
Stay tuned throughout the week for more updates on this system as it draws closer and be wary of snow hype floating around on social media. Already last week I was seeing plenty of hype.
Temperatures should get a boost by early next week with highs back around 50 degrees for a couple days. Cooler weather looks possible again toward the final days of November and into December.
