Weekend Weather Forecast
Cool northwest flow continues to produce some narrow bands of lake effect snow across the Finger Lakes this morning.
The most intense bands at 7 am were just east of Cayuga Lake and across the northeastern half of Cortland County.
Snow bands will likely wobble to and fro across these areas with lighter snow showers elsewhere. Locally, another inch or two may accumulate before the lake effect winds down.
By the early afternoon, only stray snow showers should remain, though skies will remain mostly cloudy. Northwest winds will turn more westerly with speeds dropping as well.
Afternoon highs will range from the mid 20s to the low 30s. Evening temperatures will drop back into the 20s.
Some new lake effect will develop this evening east of the Great Lakes. While the Ontario band will only just clip extreme northern Cayuga and Onondaga counties, a spray of snow showers off Erie will be possible across the Southern Tier.
These will continue into early Saturday, but winds will start to turn to the southwest as a warm front moves into the area.
Snow is now expected to break out across the region Saturday afternoon and continue into the early evening. Accumulations of 1-3 inches are possible.
Daytime highs Saturday will be in the low and mid 30s. Temperatures should rise several degrees during the overnight as the snow comes to an end.
Sunday will be cloudy, but mainly quiet. A stray rain shower cannot be totally ruled out, especially closer to Lake Ontario. Highs will be in the low 40s.
Next Week’s Weather
Monday will start out cloudy and quiet with lows in the low and mid 30s. A large area of precipitation will move toward the region and should arrive by the early afternoon.
It is likely that this will all be rain, but there is a small chance there could be a little snow mixing in at first over higher elevations in the east if the onset of the precipitation is delayed later.
High temperatures on Monday will be in the low 40s. Tuesday will follow up with highs in the upper 40s.
Scattered showers are likely on Tuesday, possibly transitioning to some steadier rain late in the day as a cold front slides through.
Wednesday’s weather is highly uncertain at this point. An area of low pressure may develop along the coast, riding north along the front. The location of the front and strength of the low will determine if we get any precipitation, and what type it may be.
Cold air should be firmly back in place by Thursday with highs struggling to reach 30 degrees. Lake effect snow showers are likely, but where they will focus and how heavy they may be is uncertain.
High pressure should largely take over Friday and through next weekend, though stray spits of precipitation may still be possible.
Temperatures will start to warm again with highs pushing 40 degrees by the weekend.
