Mild Weather Ends

Today will be the quietest and warmest remaining day this week.

There are plenty of clouds across the Finger Lakes and broader Great Lakes region this morning. However, there are also a few breaks in the overcast across the southern half of the region.

As a whole, this pattern will remain throughout today, with generally cloudy skies, but some occasional clearing to the south.

There may be some drizzle at times or even an afternoon shower across northern areas. A few hilltops may also have some fog, especially this morning.

Southwest winds will blow at 10-15 mph but may be a bit stronger around Rochester, as usual with a southwest wind. With the exception of that northwestern corner of the region, gusts should stay under 30 mph.

Temperatures will not move a whole lot today, generally staying in the mid 40s. Some parts of the Southern Tier may warm a bit more than that, especially if the sun stays out for any extended period of time.

Winds will briefly turn more westerly tonight only to turn lightly back to the south on Wednesday. The overnight will be quiet with more clouds than not and lows in the low and mid 30s.

Wednesday morning will continue to be quiet, but during the afternoon, a mix of rain, snow, and perhaps a little ice will move in. This precipitation will persist into the early evening, ending with mostly snow.

Lower elevations will see a light coating of accumulation, while higher elevations may see up to two inches.

Falling Temperatures

Behind Wednesday’s system, a little lake effect will be ongoing Thursday morning southeast of Lake Ontario. This should not have much impact expect perhaps on a highly localized basis.

There may be a little bit of afternoon sun with highs in the mid 30s.

Another system will pass through on Friday with light snow. Again, accumulations should be on the order of a coating to two inches with only minor impacts.

Winds will be light on Friday with a high again in the mid 30s. However, north and northwest winds will increase Friday night with speeds over 10 mph.

The wind will drive temperatures down with lows Saturday in the upper 10s. Afternoon highs will then only make it to the mid 20s.

Areas of lake effect snow are likely on Saturday, but to what extent and exactly where remains to be seen. Winds will be blustery, but not abnormally strong.

Cold air will continue to pour in on Sunday. Morning lows will be around 10 degrees and afternoon highs will have a hard time getting above 15 degrees.

Additional lake snows are likely but will probably be less significant than on Saturday. Winds will remain from the northwest at around 10 mph.

Monday morning will likely be when temperatures bottom out, especially if the lake effect dissipates and skies can partially or fully clear. Most areas will be down into the single digits.

Temperatures will start to moderate after that, though, with highs Monday back into the 20s.

Quiet weather is expected for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Temperatures will continue to climb with highs in the low 30s Tuesday and mid to upper 30s Wednesday.

The rest of next week looks mild with several days in the 40s. The mild weather may persist right through the end of 2024.
