Early Week Weather
Temperatures will bounce around again this week, but, as a whole, will be milder than last week.
Today will kick off the week on the warmer side as temperatures steadily rise this morning and into the afternoon. This rise in temperature will mainly be the result of a light south wind, as there will be little to no sunshine today.
Afternoon highs will make it into the mid 40s for most areas with only a slight dip to the low 40s during the first part of the evening hours.
Though skies will be cloudy, precipitation is not expected until the later afternoon hours as a cold front slowly approaches from the north.
Precipitation will be all rain during the afternoon and into the first part of the evening. Eventually, during the latter half of the evening, the rain will turn over to snow or perhaps some sort of an icy mix.
Temperatures will drop below freezing during the 1 AM to 4 AM time period. By then, most of the precipitation should be winding down. While a couple slick spots cannot be ruled out early Tuesday, most areas shouldn’t have any travel troubles.
Occasional flurries will be possible throughout Tuesday with a general uptick in snow showers late in the afternoon and into the evening.
These will be lake effect snow showers produced by a northwest wind, so the areas east of Cayuga Lake will have the best shot at this snow. Accumulations through Tuesday night will mainly be under 2 inches.
The winds on Tuesday will be a bit blustery with occasional gusts as high as 35 mph. The strongest gusts will be along the shore of Lake Ontario and east of Cayuga Lake.
Temperatures will not move much on Tuesday, dropping from the upper 20s in the morning to the mid 20s in the afternoon. Overnight lows will then drop to the mid 10s.
Wednesday looks to be a cloudy but quiet day. Afternoon highs will make it into the mid 20s.
Active Late Week Weather
Another push of warmer air will start to build in Wednesday night with temperatures rising to around 30 degrees. Precipitation will also move in and continue steadily through the morning hours.
It is still early, but widespread freezing rain with amounts up to a quarter inch will be a possibility. Unfortunately, this may also be accompanied by strong south winds with gusts of 40 or even 50 mph.
If this scenario unfolds, numerous power outages and hazardous travel would be possible, if not likely.
Freezing rain events are often highly location dependent thanks to the complex terrain of our region and its influences on temperatures. Stay tuned for more updates over the coming days.
While Thursday morning may be icy, the afternoon may warm back into the mid 40s again. Winds are likely to remain strong.
Cooler air will move back in Thursday night with lows dropping well into the 20s. Highs Friday will only be a couple degrees warmer with now northwest winds remaining gusty. Areas of lake effect snow will be possible.
Another potentially sloppy system will move in on Saturday. Ice, snow, and/or rain will be possible, but confidence is even lower this far out.
Rain and snow showers are likely to persist into Sunday, but the chances of ice will be lower.
The temperature roller-coaster should level out next week with highs mainly sticking to the 20s. An active weather pattern will keep some chances for snow in the forecast.
