Mid-Week Weather

As the low pressure system that moved through this weekend continues to slowly move northeast toward the north Atlantic, we will see some slight improvement in the weather today.

For starters, much of the area is starting off with a good deal of sunshine this morning. There are some scattered lake effect clouds around to mix with the sunshine. This should persist much of the day.

Along the shore of Lake Ontario and the Cayuga-Oswego and Onondaga-Oswego county lines, clouds are thicker and lake effect snow is falling, especially north of Syracuse.

The snow will stay in this general area throughout the day and into the evening and overnight hours.

Winds will continue to be blustery but will be a notable notch lower than yesterday. Top gusts today should be around 35 mph, still coming in from the west.

That will be strong enough to cause more blow and drifting snow, mainly in open rural areas.

Wind chills will also be low today due to the wind. Morning wind chills will be in the -10s for many, with afternoon wind chills remaining below zero.

Afternoon highs will mainly stay in the mid and upper 10s with evening temperatures quickly falling to the single digits.

Lake effect snow will eventually sag south after midnight, leading to some widespread light snow across the northern and eastern areas Wednesday morning. In particular, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Cortland counties will see snow, along with northern portions of Ontario, Seneca, and Tompkins counties.

Most of these areas should see a fluffy inch or two before the snow lifts back north and dissipates during the midday hours. A few localized areas could see three or four inches.

The afternoon should be quieter, and some sun may try to poke back out. Winds will be much lighter with top gusts will be 20-25 mph. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 10s with a few areas hitting 20 degrees.

Light Snow Chances

A weak weather system will swing into the area on Thursday from the west.

Snow will overspread the region during the morning hours and fall lightly into the afternoon and evening. By midnight, most areas should have a fresh 1-3 inches of accumulation.

Winds Thursday will be from the northwest with gusts to 25 mph. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the upper 10s and low 20s.

As this system pulls away Thursday night, the snow will transition to areas of lake effect. The snow will decrease Friday morning, and by the afternoon, should mainly be contained to northern Cayuga and Onondaga counties. Locally another two or three inches may fall after midnight into Friday.

Winds will also increase a bit with gusts of 25-35 mph on Friday, especially in the morning. The wind will lessen late in the day and into Friday night.

Temperatures on Friday will start in the mid 10s and top out in the low 20s.

The weekend looks fairly quiet and a bit warmer. There will likely be a few snow showers here and there. Yesterday, it looked like Saturday was the favored day for this. Now, it looks more like late Sunday into Monday.

Regardless, this should have very little impact on travel and day-to-day activities.

Highs on Saturday should be in the low 30s with mid 30s Sunday and upper 30s possible by Monday.

Temperatures next week are favored to stay in the 30s. Winds and any precipitation generally look light.
