February Thaw
Winter will let up a bit this week with several days of mild weather and little to no snowfall.
The mild weather is starting today thanks to a low pressure center far to the north over Canada. Milder air is being transported north ahead of the system, but it will be too far away to supply much in the way of cold air as it passes by.
Clouds are on the increase this morning in response to this system as well, though there are still some breaks of sun. Overall, it will be more cloudy than not today, but most areas will stay dry. At most, a brief spit of a few raindrops will be possible.
South winds will become blustery as the day goes on with afternoon wind speeds of 15-20 mph. Top gusts will generally be in the 25-35 mph range.
Afternoon highs will be into the mid 40s for most areas with slightly cooler temperatures in the higher elevations.
Not much will change overnight, though wind speeds will drop. It will remain cloudy with a spit of drizzle here or there. Most areas will not even drop below freezing tonight with lows generally in the mid 30s.
Precipitation will move in and become fairly widespread Tuesday morning, persisting into the afternoon. Most areas will see rain, but some higher elevations across the Southern Tier into Central New York may see a mix of rain and snow, or even just snow.
Any accumulation should be limited to an inch or less over only the highest elevations.
Winds will be light, starting from the south then turning to the west. Temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than today with highs in the upper 30s and low 40s.
Wednesday will be another mostly cloudy but quiet day. Highs will stick to the low 40s after a morning low in the low and mid 30s. By evening, some rain and snow showers may pass through.
Temperatures will rise to near 40 degrees by Thursday morning and into the mid 40s by the midday. Rain showers will be common and temperatures will start to fall late in the day.

Cooler Weekend
Temperatures will drop into the upper 20s Thursday night with some light lake effect snow developing. Snow showers will linger into early Friday before dissipating. Only minor, isolated accumulations are expected at this time.
Northwest winds will be blustery Friday morning with a brief period where gusts of 30-40 mph will be possible. The winds will lessen for the afternoon.
Temperatures will lose a couple more degrees during the day on Friday with mid 20s in the afternoon. However, temperatures will come back up to the upper 20s Friday night.
A weather system will bring rain and snow showers into the area on Saturday. South winds will increase and temperatures will briefly make it into the mid and upper 30s before a cold front moves through.
By Sunday morning, temperatures will be down into the 10s with areas of lake effect snow. The snow should dissipate rather quickly with highs Sunday in the mid 20s.
Sunday looks blustery as well, with northwest winds gusting between 30-40 mph.
Next week’s weather looks mainly influenced by a mid-week weather system. Warm air will try to make another push in ahead of this system, but how warm it gets and what this system brings will depend on its strength and path, which are extreme uncertainties this far out.
For the most part, though at a minimum, next week also looks like it will not be a return of the persistent cold and snow.
