Weekend Weather Forecast
A large, powerful low pressure system will dominate the weather pattern over eastern North America for the next few days, including here in the Finger Lakes.
Despite the low being centered over eastern Colorado this morning, it is already causing a large surge of warm air to lift north across the eastern United States.
As this warm air moves north, it is giving birth to clouds. Some of the thinnest clouds on the edge of this area are starting to move into the Finger Lakes Friday morning.
Most of Friday will be sunny, but the clouds will gradually increase and thicken. By the end of the day, the remaining sunlight should be filtered behind a thin veil of clouds. No rain is expected, though.
South winds will blow with speeds around 10 mph. With the sunshine, highs should range through the 60s today. Areas like Dansville and Batavia may even hit 70 degrees.
Winds will increase slightly tonight and more substantially on Saturday. Still from the south, wind speeds may be over 20 mph at times, especially over higher elevations. A few gusts will be near or over 40 mph.
Temperatures will stay in the 40s tonight with many areas at or above 45 degrees. Saturday will actually be a degree or two cooler for most areas with more low 60s than mid 60s. This can be attributed to thicker clouds and less available sunshine.
There will be just a small chance for a stray, brief shower over the far western Finger Lakes Saturday afternoon. Most areas will remain completely dry.
Gusty winds will persist Saturday night, then increase further Sunday morning. Peak gusts on Sunday have the potential to go over 50 mph, especially over the eastern Finger Lakes during the late morning and early afternoon.
Scattered rain showers will be possible Sunday morning with a better chance for rain in the mid and late afternoon. A few thunderstorms may be possible as well, especially over the southeastern Finger Lakes, roughly from Bath to Watkins Glen to Ithaca to Tully and eastward.
Any storms may be able to tap into the strong winds and produce some isolated severe thunderstorms, even if the lightning is limited.
High temperatures on Sunday will be similar to today with mid and some upper 60s for most areas.

Springtime Temperature Shifts Continue
The rain and thunderstorms on Sunday will be due to a cold front moving through. Behind the front, winds will quickly die off and turn to the southwest. Cooler air will move in, with temperatures Sunday night falling to the mid 30s.
Cloudy skies Monday morning will give way to mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. Temperatures will be about twenty degrees cooler than the weekend, with highs in the mid 40s.
Monday night will drop to the low 30s and perhaps a few upper 20s, but then warmer air will start to make a quick return.
Tuesday will have highs in the mid 50s while Wednesday shoots up into the 60s again.
Tuesday will be similar to today, with sunshine gradually mixing with and being replaced by thin clouds.
Wednesday will be like Saturday, with limited filtered sun through overcast skies, but with dry conditions.
And, not surprisingly, Thursday will be similar to Sunday, though not as warm and not quite as windy. Highs will be in the upper 50s, though some 60s may be possible depending on the timing of the cold front expected to move through.
Another day of cool weather is expected behind the front on Friday with a chance for temperatures to moderate slightly next weekend.
