Cold Front
An area of low pressure is moving through Michigan and into southern Ontario this morning.
Out ahead of the low, an area of mostly clear skies is passing over the Finger Lakes. Sunshine will be abundant for a time this morning before clouds gradually start to increase.
Winds remained blustery overnight and will continue to be gusty this morning before decreasing slightly this afternoon.
Rain showers will start to move in this afternoon ahead of and along the cold front associated with this low. The rain will be scattered at first but should increase in coverage late in the afternoon.
There is a slight uncertainty in how quickly the more widespread rain will move eastward. Much of it could end up falling east of the area this evening. The further east in the region you are, the higher the chances for steady rain persisting for a couple hours after sunset.
Temperatures will be variable across the region. Generally speaking, eastern areas will be warmer than those to the west. Elevation will also play a role, though.
The warmest temperatures will be found near Syracuse, into the Southern Tier, and around Dansville. Mid 60s are possible in these areas. In contrast, the higher elevations of the western Southern Tier will see mid and upper 50s.
Temperatures will drop quickly this evening as winds turn to the northwest behind the front. Most areas will be into the 30s by midnight, again with western areas being colder than the east. By Friday morning, mid and upper 20s will be widespread through the region.
A few rain showers will turn to flurries overnight, but by sunrise, most areas should be clearing out. This will set up sunny skies for the duration of Friday.
The northwest winds will flare up overnight as well with gusts of 30-40 mph. Gusts of 25-35 mph will linger Friday morning before gradually dropping in the afternoon.
Dry air will be in place on Friday with relative humidity values locally dropping to near or under 30 perfect. With the blustery winds, this will present an increased brush fire risk on Friday, despite cooler temperatures.
Highs Friday will mainly be in the low and mid 40s. The broad valleys of the Southern Tier, including Elmira and Dansville, will see highs in the upper 40s to perhaps near 50 degrees.

Cooler Weather Sticks Around
The up and down temperature pattern of the last couple weeks will stabilize with fewer large fluctuations or departures from the climatological averages.
Saturday will have another small weather system pass through the area. Winds will turn to the south ahead of this system Friday night, holding temperatures in the mid 30s.
Afternoon highs on Saturday will be in the upper 40s with a few low 50s in the typically warmer urban and valley locations.
Winds will be on the blustery side again with gusts of 30-40 mph common on Saturday. A late day cold front will bring some rain showers, possibly with a few flurries during the nighttime hours.
Sunday will start with temperatures in the mid 20s. A few lingering spits of snow may be possible very early southeast of Lake Ontario.
The rest of the day will be mainly overcast, though the clouds may be thin enough to allow some sunlight to filter through. Highs will be in the mid 40s.
Another system will pass through on Monday with some scattered rain showers and highs getting slightly above 50 degrees.
The middle of next week is uncertain with a couple systems passing through the area, but possibly being small enough to miss our region. Temperatures will stick to the upper 30s and low 40s.
There will be a small chance for some milder temperatures toward next weekend and into early April, but all in all, it will probably be more of a minor rise than a significant jump up like we have seen recently.
