Cloudy to Rainy
An unexpected area of thin clouds has covered most of the region early this morning.
These clouds are associated with the low pressure system that moved through this weekend, which is still lingering just east of New England.
The clouds have kept temperatures a few degrees warmer than was expected, mitigating the frost risk for many areas.
These clouds will start to burn off during the mid-morning hours, opening a small window for some sunshine before new clouds filter in from the southwest.
This second batch of clouds will be from a new low pressure system that will hang around our area for the rest of the week.
No rain is expected today, and winds will remain from the north with speeds up to 10 mph.
Temperatures will depend on how long the window for sunshine stays open during the middle of the day, but as a general rule, it will be another cool day. Most areas will see highs in the low and mid 50s with a few warmer pockets.
Clouds will only become thicker overnight and a stray spit of rain cannot be ruled out. Lows will be in the mid 40s with no frost concerns. Winds will shift to a southeasterly direction overnight.
A widespread area of steady rain will move from southwest to northeast across the Finger Lakes Wednesday during the mid to late morning hours. Once the rain arrives, it will continue for the remainder of the day and into the nighttime hours.
The solid area of precipitation will gradually become a bit more broken and showery, but the showers will be so numerous that it will not make much of a practical difference as we head into Thursday.
Rain will continue throughout Thursday with only small breaks here and there.
Through Thursday evening, many areas will approach or slightly exceed an inch of rainfall.
Southeast winds will be steady throughout the rain, becoming blustery at times with some gusts around 30 mph.
Temperatures will struggle to the low and mid 50s tomorrow, with highs Thursday likely a bit cooler with more low 50s and fewer mid 50s. Overnight lows will be in the mid 40s.

More Unsettled Weather
The low pressure system responsible for this rain will stall out just west of Buffalo from Wednesday night into early Friday before it redevelops along the New England coast. It will move little from that position as well, lingering through the weekend.
Dry air wrapping into the low may provide some breaks in the rain on Friday, but there will still be numerous showers around for most of the day.
The rain should not be as steady and heavy as on Wednesday and Thursday, though.
Not much will change for Saturday, either, as northwest winds behind the New England low keep out weather cool and unsettled. The rain will be similar to on Friday, with numerous showers and some occasional periods where the rain lets up.
Temperatures will remain steady in the lower half of the 50s for highs. Friday will likely be a touch cooler than Saturday. Overnight temperatures will continue to drop to the mid 40s.
The rain will finally start to be meaningfully less on Sunday when scattered showers will be shorter lived and spaced out more. Temperatures may even be able to return to the low 60s for highs.
Monday, Memorial Day, will see continued improvement with just a few showers in the morning and a chance for a mainly dry afternoon. Highs in the mid 60s look reasonable.
Rain chances will increase again toward the middle of next week, but that does not look like another prolonged event.
Temperatures will warm through next week, adding a couple degrees each day. As we turn from May to June next weekend, highs should be back near or above 70 degrees.
