Late Week Storms

A slow-moving front will move into the area, bringing a chance for showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday.

Most of today will be dry, with the showers and storms not expected to pop up until the mid to late afternoon.

The showers and storms are expected to remain scattered in small clusters, so a few areas may not see rain at all today.

Thunderstorms are generally not expected to be too strong, though one or two may briefly achieve severe status with some strong winds. This should remain very isolated, though.

Skies will be a mix of sun, clouds, and light amounts of smoke before the front arrives.

Temperatures will have a northwest to southeast gradient, with mid and possibly even upper 80s between Elmira and Binghamton, but mid 70s along the shore of Lake Ontario back into the Rochester and Batavia areas.

Much of the Finger Lakes will at least see 80 degrees. Humidity levels will be muggy with mid and upper 60s dewpoints.

Scattered showers are expected overnight, though much of the time it may not be raining. Overnight lows will be near or just above 60 degrees.

Showers and thunderstorms will be on and off on Friday throughout the day, but especially during the afternoon.

The best chance for thunderstorms will be across the southeastern half of the region. Again, severe weather is not expected except perhaps in isolated, brief instances.

Temperatures on Friday will mainly be in the mid 70s with dewpoints remaining in the mid and upper 60s.

More Storms Next Week

A few stray showers cannot be ruled out on Saturday, particularly during the morning hours. However, for the most part, the day will be dry. Sunshine will also increase with skies potentially becoming mostly clear late in the day.

Northwest winds will kick up a bit Saturday afternoon, reaching speeds around 10 mph. Gusts will only be slightly over 20 mph, though.

Temperatures will remain in the mid 70s.

Sunday, too, looks dry with a mix of sun and clouds. Morning lows will be a bit cooler, reaching the low 50s. Afternoon highs should be in the mid 70s again.

Showers and storms will return on Monday and Tuesday. The overall weather pattern and wind fields look more favorable for severe storm potential both days compared to today or Friday. However, the prevalence of rain and clouds may put a limit on how much energy the atmosphere has to work with.

Needless to say, uncertainty is high this far out, as always. I will keep a close eye on this.

That system should depart the area on Wednesday with a few lingering showers possible, mainly in the morning.

Dry, mild weather is expected late next week with highs possibly inching back toward 80 degrees.

Ugh! It seems like we haven’t seen this much spring and early summer rain since 2017. This is the pits. Any chance summer will be better than this?

Precipitation trends are extremely difficult to pick up on long term… they can be thrown totally off by one or two extreme events. For the little it is worth, the Climate Prediction Center has us favored for *below* average precipitation in the second half of June, but still favored for above average precipitation for the summer as a whole.
