A Couple Weather Systems
High pressure has another firm grip on our weather and will keep low pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast from getting too close to our region.
For today, the high pressure system will dominate with mostly sunny skies for much of the day.
Winds will be nearly calm or just light and variable through the morning hours. A northeast wind will develop this afternoon with speeds around 5 mph as the low pressure system attempts to drift northward.
It will be a warm day with many areas around 80 degrees. The valleys of the Southern Tier should be above 80 degrees, while some of the higher elevations will be closer to 75 degrees.
Thin clouds will start to push in from the southeast during the afternoon hours and especially this evening. These clouds will stick around for Wednesday, reducing the sunshine at least somewhat.
Expect periods of filtered sunshine on Wednesday, but also perhaps some periods where it is more cloudy than not. A stray shower may even be possible, mainly over Tioga and Cortland counties.
Temperatures Wednesday will start in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs will be a touch cooler, thanks to the clouds, in the mid 70s. Winds will remain light with speeds near or under 5 mph with varying easterly winds.
The coastal low will dissipate by Thursday, allowing sunshine to return in abundance on Thursday. After morning lows in the mid 50s again, afternoon highs should be back around 80 degrees. Morning winds will be light and variable, followed by a northwest breeze in the afternoon.
A small window for a few showers will be open Friday morning as a strong, but dry cold front moves through. Sunshine will increase for the afternoon.
Winds will turn to the north-northwest with speeds around 10 mph behind the front, holding afternoon highs near or below 70 degrees.

Weather This Weekend and Next Week
Skies will clear completely Friday night with winds becoming nearly calm.
With cool air behind the cold front firmly in place, temperatures will drop quite a bit Friday night. By Saturday morning, most areas should be in the lower half of the 40s. The chance for a couple frosty pockets in rural Cortland County will need to be watched.
Clear skies will remain throughout the day on Saturday with light east winds. Afternoon highs will top out around 70 degrees.
The cool air will not linger with increasing south winds Saturday night into Sunday. Wind speeds on Sunday will approach 15 mph with gusts around 25 mph.
This will drive temperatures back toward the upper 70s with a mix of sun and clouds. A stray shower may be possible late in the day and into the nighttime hours, but this remains highly uncertain.
Showers and a few thunderstorms may be possible on Monday, but again, the uncertainty is high. It will be a warm day with highs in the 80s probable.
Temperatures will gradually decrease next week, but how fast and how far is unclear. Rain chances beyond Monday are also too uncertain to draw many conclusions about at this time.
