Early Week High Pressure
An area of high pressure will keep the weather quiet for the first half of the week.
Much of the region is starting the week off with sunshine this morning, but there are some areas of fog in the valleys of the Southern Tier and into the southern Finger Lakes.
Like yesterday, the fog will burn off during the mid-morning hours. Skies will remain mostly sunny from there, with just a few passing, small clouds from time to time.
Winds will be light from the northeast at around 5 mph. This will keep temperatures in check, with most areas in the upper 40s or low 50s this afternoon.
It will be another clear, cold night tonight with almost all areas at or below the freezing mark. The coldest areas will see mid 20s, like this morning.
Again, some areas of fog are likely, but will burn off before too long, leaving sunny skies. Again, just a few passing clouds are expected here and there.
Tuesday’s winds will be from the east and northeast with speeds near or slightly over 5 mph.
Afternoon highs will be a couple degrees warmer than today. Most should end up between 50-55 degrees, even in the higher elevations.
Tuesday night will be similar to the previous two nights with lows ranging from the mid 20s to the low 30s.
Sunshine and some morning fog are expected for the start of Wednesday before clouds start to roll in during the afternoon. There is a small chance some rain showers may build in before sunset, but the bulk of the coming rain will hold off until Wednesday night and Thursday.
High temperatures Wednesday will add a couple more degrees, with many areas into the mid 50s. Winds will be from the east, but may vary between northeast and southeast at times. Wind speeds will remain light.

Unsettled Weather Ahead
Low pressure will head north toward the region on Thursday, crossing overhead late in the day.
With the track expected to come over our area, slight adjustments to the west and east may have significant impacts on how this system evolves for us.
A track further west would mean more wind, slightly warmer air, and a heavier but shorter lived band of rain. A track further east may mean less wind, cooler air, and a longer duration of lighter intensity rainfall. And a track directly over the middle of the Finger Lakes would likely have characteristics of both other scenarios.
The constants that do not depend on the track are that it will rain Wednesday night into Thursday, and that showers and cool air will linger around into Friday, followed by some lake effect showers possible on Saturday.
If the system takes a cooler, eastern track, there could be a few snowflakes mixing in Thursday night and early Friday morning, mainly over higher elevations.
Temperatures are the least certain on Thursday, but should be somewhere in the 50s. Friday will be cooler with highs around 50 degrees. Temperatures will remain steady around 50 degrees through the weekend.
Another small system will pass through on Sunday with a chance for some scattered showers. This should be followed by a small break in the weather early next week.
The next larger system should move in toward the middle of next week. This system will have more cold air to work with, so the chances for at least some wet snowflakes mixing in as the system pulls away are higher.
Beyond the middle of next week, the weather becomes too uncertain to discern any useful information.
