Early Week Weather
The weather pattern this week, and likely beyond, will be characterized by frequent weather systems passing through.
High pressure that passed through the area this weekend is on the way out this morning. Still, we are off to a sunny start. Southerly winds developed last night and have kept temperatures from falling too far except in some more sheltered areas.
Clouds are already making their way into western New York early this morning and will gradually increase across the Finger Lakes through the morning hours.
These clouds are associated with our first system of the week: a large low pressure system far to the north over Canada dragging a frontal boundary through the northern United States.
Rain showers from this front will overspread the area from west to east during the early to mid afternoon. The rain will be on and off for several hours but should mostly move out by the early evening hours.
The rain will generally be light, with rainfall amounts under a quarter inch for most areas. Some places may barely see enough to measure, especially across the southern half of the region.
South winds will be around 10 mph this morning, then turning to the southwest and increasing to near 15 mph for the afternoon. A few gusts around 30 mph are possible.
Afternoon highs will be in the mid and upper 50s, with eastern areas generally warmer than western areas with the sunshine lasting a bit longer this morning.
A few stray showers will be possible this evening, followed by some limited lake effect across the northeastern Finger Lakes during the overnight as winds turn to the northwest. Wind speeds will remain around 15 mph overnight.
Temperatures will drop to the 35 to 40 degree range. A few wet snowflakes will be possible in the lake effect south of Syracuse.
Lake effect showers will linger into Tuesday morning, mainly over those same northeastern areas. The rest of the region should see sun and clouds and a dry morning. Everyone should end up dry with some sun Tuesday afternoon.
Winds will remain blustery and should even increase a bit, reaching speeds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph. These winds will remain from the northwest but will weaken and turn to the southwest by the evening.
Temperatures on Tuesday will be a couple degrees cooler than today with highs in the low and mid 50. Like last night, southerly winds will prevent it from getting too cold Tuesday night with lows of 35 to 40 degrees.

Staying Unsettled
The general weather pattern of rain arriving late one day and showers lingering into the next morning will repeat itself twice more this week.
Wednesday will turn out like today, with clouds increasing in the morning and showers arriving for the afternoon and evening. This shot of rain looks a bit heavier, with most areas expected to see between one-third and two-thirds of an inch.
Showers will linger overnight and into early Thursday before giving way to some sunshine.
Temperatures will rise to the mid and upper 50s on Wednesday with south, and then southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. A period of strong winds is expected Wednesday evening as the cold front passes by, resulting in northwest winds up to 25 mph and gusting near or over 45 mph.
These winds will deliver a shot of cool air with lows Thursday a few degrees on either side 35 degrees. Like tomorrow, this may result in a few wet snowflakes over higher elevations Wednesday night and early Thursday.
High temperatures on Thursday will only be in the mid 40s. Northwest winds will remain blustery, but not as strong, with gusts around 35 mph.
The weather will wind up and do it all again Friday into Saturday, with rain arriving Friday afternoon and lingering into early Saturday.
South winds Friday will boost temperatures back to the low 50s, once again with some blustery wind gusts. These will turn to the northwest Friday night and Saturday, keeping highs in the 40s on Saturday.
Another system may roll in on Sunday with more rain and wind. A more substantial shot of cold air will follow with a chance for high temperatures in the 30s for at least a day or two early next week. Models are in good general early agreement that at least some snow flakes off of Lake Ontario will be possible.
Much of next week may have highs struggling to penetrate far into the 40s with the weather staying unsettled.
