Late Week Weather Forecast
Low pressure over eastern Canada continues to supply a cool, moist flow of air through the Great Lakes region.
The lakes themselves are adding to the moisture, producing a spray of precipitation downwind. Lakes Huron and Ontario are the primary precipitation producers this morning, with winds further west less aligned for lake effect production.
This morning in the Finger Lakes, temperatures have remained just warm enough that pretty much everything that is falling is doing so as rain. Showers are sporadic, with more widespread activity just to the north, east of Lake Ontario.
Winds, which are more westerly this morning, should jog a bit more toward a northwesterly flow, which should lead to an increase in showers across the northeastern half of the region, especially this afternoon and evening.
Most should fall as rain, but some snowflakes may mix in over the higher elevations south of Syracuse.
Afternoon highs will be in the low and mid 40s for most, but some of those hilly areas may stick to the upper 30s.
The wind speeds will pick up during the midday and afternoon with gusts of 25 to 35 mph. The strongest winds will be over the southwestern half of the area.
Temperatures will drop back into the low and mid 30s this evening, allowing snow to mix in or take over and the lake effect to become better organized.
Some squally weather will be possible in the higher elevations across Cayuga, southern Onondaga, and Cortland counties in particular. Some of these areas could see a few inches of snowfall on a localized basis.
Most other areas will see rain showers turn to flurries with limited, if any, accumulations. The lake effect will become less organized again after midnight.
Overnight lows will be in the mid and upper 20s in higher terrain, with low 30s in most other areas and a few mid 30s along the lakeshores.
Scattered flurries, and possibly a few rain showers, will continue Friday morning and into the midday hours. These will generally be short-lived and sporadic, so no real snow accumulations are expected. There may even be a few glimpses of the sun late in the day.
Afternoon highs Friday will be in the low and mid 40s. Winds will be from the northwest with a few gusts as high as 30 mph.

Weekend Weather Forecast
Mainly quiet weather is expected Friday night with partly cloudy skies. A stray flurry cannot be ruled out, but anything that falls should be insignificant.
Winds will become nearly calm, allowing most areas to drop into the mid and upper 20s Friday night.
Any lingering breaks in the clouds on Saturday will be limited to very early in the day. Overcast will quickly build in from the west in advance of the next weather maker.
Winds will also turn southerly ahead of this system, helping push temperatures into the low and mid 50s for most of the region. Hilly areas east of Cayuga Lake, and especially in and around Cortland County, will stick to the upper 40s.
Widespread rain will arrive in the late afternoon or early evening hours and continue through the evening. A cold front will pass through during the middle of the night, with the rain becoming more showery thereafter.
Winds will turn to the northwest with the passage of the front. Both these winds and the southerly evening winds will have speeds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts to 30 mph.
Temperatures will stay in the 40s through the night, but will be dropping by sunrise. Throughout Sunday, a couple more degrees will be lost, with temperatures mainly in the 30s for the afternoon.
There will be rain and snow showers around on Sunday, but the wind will be the main weather story.
Northwest winds will increase to 20 to 25 mph with gusts around or over 45 mph likely. Wind speeds will drop somewhat after sunset, but it will remain breezy overnight.
Scattered snow showers will persist Sunday night with temperatures falling to the upper 20s and low 30s.
Monday will have more wind, though not quite as strong as on Sunday. Scattered snow showers will continue to fly, possibly with some localized light accumulations. Highs will be in the mid and upper 30s.
A few flurries may linger into early Tuesday, but then high pressure should give us a small break from the active weather. There may even be sunshine mixed with the clouds later Tuesday and on Wednesday.
Temperatures will rise back into the 40s for the middle of next week, and next weekend, though uncertain, may make a run at 50 degrees with rain showers.
