Early Week Lake Effect Snow
Lake effect snow is ongoing in the cold, northwesterly flow behind the weekend’s low pressure system that moved through.
As usual in this type of setup, most of the snow is contained to the northern and eastern parts of the Finger Lakes with more sporadic, lighter snow showers interspersed with some breaks of sunshine to the west and south.
In particular, the higher elevations east of Cayuga Lake and south of Syracuse have seen some light accumulations overnight and will continue to be the focal point for some additional accumulations.
The wind direction will jog slightly more westerly this morning, sending most of the snow showers northeastward and nearly out of the region by the afternoon. Lingering flurries will be most likely in northern Cayuga and Onondaga counties.
The wind will be stiff and cold again, but not quite as strong as yesterday. Wind gusts will generally be around 35 mph, with a few localized gusts reaching 40 mph. Winds will be strongest this morning through the early afternoon and should decrease later on.
Afternoon highs will mainly be in the mid and upper 30s. A few of the valleys of the Southern Tier may hit 40 degrees, especially if there are some periods that are more sunny than not. Likewise, a few hilltops, mainly between Cortland and Syracuse, may struggle to quite make it to the mid 30s.
A well organized but narrow band of lake effect may move back into the area tonight, especially between midnight and sunrise. This will be most likely across eastern Wayne, northern Cayuga, southwestern Onondaga, and northern Cortland counties. A few inches may locally accumulate in these areas, while the rest of the region sees partly to mostly cloudy skies.
Overnight lows will range from the low 30s north of the Thruway to the mid 20s across the Southern Tier.
Snow showers will linger in those same northeastern areas early Tuesday before lifting off to the northeast and out of the region. No other precipitation is expected tomorrow with a mix of sun and clouds.
Winds will be from the west-northwest at up to 10 mph. Afternoon highs will average out around 40 degrees.

Quieter Weather
Except for one day, the rest of the week is looking quiet as a couple areas of high pressure pass through.
Wednesday should have a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will start out ranging through the 20s but should rise into the low and mid 40s. Winds will be nearly calm.
Thursday will also have some sun, but perhaps with clouds increasing later in the day. A light south wind will develop. Morning lows will be in the upper half of the 20s and afternoon highs will reach the mid 40s.
Friday is the day where precipitation will pass through, but the rain does not look overly heavy. South winds in the morning will turn to the northwest by the afternoon as a cold front passes through. None of these winds look notably strong.
Temperatures should reach around 50 degrees on Friday before the front moves through.
A quiet weekend looks likely with highs in the low 40s Saturday and mid 40s on Sunday. Winds look light, and there should be some sunshine mixing with clouds.
The forecast next week is a bit less certain, but the best chance for rain looks like it may come toward the middle of the week.
Temperatures should stay in the 40s with a couple chances at reaching 50 degrees. Cooler weather may build in for the final days of November.
