Steady Snow
The first widespread snow event of the season is underway across the Finger Lakes.
As of about 7 AM, most areas seem to have picked up 1-2 inches so far. Steady snow stretches back into Ohio, but the back edge will make consistent progress northeastward.
Snow will continue at about the same intensity through most of the morning hours. Some western areas will start to see the snow taper off by late morning, but most of the region will not see this occur until the midday or first half of the afternoon.
Travel conditions will vary, with the major, well-tended routes being wet to slushy, while rural roads will get snow covered between treatments.
Snow totals will generally end up around 3-5 inches for the region. A few higher elevations in the eastern Finger Lakes may see 6 or so with snow lingering there longest this afternoon as the back edge slows its progress.
Once the snow tapers off and ends, skies will remain mostly cloudy, but it will be a quiet afternoon. Temperatures will top out in the low and mid 30s with light north-northwest winds.
It will remain cloudy tonight with a few stray flurries. Winds will remain from the northwest much of the night, but will turn to the southwest during the predawn hours. Overnight lows will be in the upper 10s and low 20s.
Wednesday will be a quiet day. Skies will be mostly cloudy, but a few brief glimpses of sun cannot be ruled out. No snow is expected.
Winds will remain from the southwest with light speeds under 10 mph. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 30s.
The wind will pick up slightly Wednesday night with speeds around 10 mph. These winds will help hold temperatures near 30 degrees overnight.

Thursday Squalls
A cold front will move through the area Thursday morning. Conditions look favorable for snow squalls with the frontal passage.
The snow squalls will likely be brief but may be intense with heavy snow and strong winds. These types of squalls can make travel hazardous, so if you have plans to be on the roads Thursday, keep an eye on the forecast over the next 36-48 hours as the details become clearer.
As winds turn to the northwest behind the front, they will increase substantially with speeds approaching 20 mph and gusts of 35-40 mph.
Temperatures will be falling as well, reaching the mid 20s by the mid-afternoon. With the wind, it will feel more like 5 to 15 degrees by the time school lets out.
There will likely be some snow showers in the afternoon as well, but probably not to the same degree as the potential squalls in the morning.
Winds will drop Thursday evening and become mostly calm Thursday night as high pressure moves overhead. At least some partial clearing of the sky is also likely overnight.
This will lead to a cold start to Friday, with many areas down into the single digits.
South winds will develop Friday morning as the high passes east. Morning sunshine will give way to some afternoon clouds. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 20s.
Temperatures will be a little less cold this weekend, with Saturday turning out to be the warmer of the two days in the mid 30s. Highs Sunday will be closer to 30 degrees.
Both days look cloudy, and a few spits of snow cannot be ruled out. No accumulating snow is expected, though.
Cold air will move back in on Monday, with highs in the mid 20s at most. The rest of next week looks cool as well, with highs in the 20s most days.
There may be some chances for snow later in the week, but at this time, there is nothing substantial showing on the models.
